The material flow accounting model was developed to calculate a supply-demand balance at a province level in China, and was applied to Zhejiang Province. We also evaluated the effect of reductions in GHG emissions, mineral resources consumption, and land use through the following two alternative options of biomass utilization; Energy conversion and material recovery. The results showed that GHG emissions reduction effects by energy conversion case could be 30Mt-CO_2 and 1.8 times bigger than material recovery case. Yet, the latter could save more mineral resources and land.

The hydrodenitrogenation of the bio-oil produced from activated sludge was performed at 250-370℃ and 2.0MPa over the sulfided P-added NiMo/Al_2O_3 catalysts. The bio-oil was prepared from the pyrolysis of dried activated sludge using steam, nitrogen and air fed to a fluidized bed reactor at 500℃ and residence time of 1s. The reaction in the present work was carried out in a continuous flow fixed bed reactor with LHSV=5-10h^<-1>. The xylene-soluble (partially dissolved) bio-oil (BO/Xy) and totally soluble bio-oil in ethanol (BO/EtOH, ratio=1:4) and in diethylene glycol (BO/DEG, ratio=1:8) were prepared as the reaction feed. The nitrogen containing compounds were totally denitrogenated throughout the 6h reaction period during the hydrotreatment of BO/Xy containing 0.5% nitrogen compounds at 367℃. Indole, pyridine and other compounds were denitrogenated.

Asia has been experiencing very high population growth and urbanization. Asian countries will witness a large population increase, which will have important implications for a variety of urban environmental issues, such as solid waste management. Nowadays, waste management is a major challenge in Asian countries, as it creates environmental problems. The present study reveals the problems and issues of solid waste management in Asian countries and certain important problems and issues that must be addressed in order to achieve public cooperation. At the core of the problems of solid waste management are the absence of adequate policies, enabling legislation, and an environmentally stimulated and enlightened public. This paper aims to identify parameters that help to explain the present situation and to assess the future amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated per capita in different Asian countries and how to develop an effective waste management strategy for Asian countries according to economic level.

Rapid urbanization economic development in developing counties has been taking place hand-in-hand with diffusion of household appliances like air conditioner, and residential and commercial energy consumption in those countries will become one of the key factors affecting global warming. This study took Shanghai, one of the biggest cities in China as a case study area, and aimed to predict future (by the year of 2030) energy consumption of residential and commercial sector based on our estimation model of energy demand and CO<SUB>2</SUB> reduction potential. Taking into several CO<SUB>2</SUB> reduction measures, CO<SUB>2</SUB> reduction potential was estimated. The results suggested that our estimation model could provide several useful policy implications and would be applicable to the other cities of China.

Upgrading the products for the extension of their life is the effective strategy in construction of Resources-Recycling society. Actually the upgradable products such as User-made PC (PC; personal computer) are come into the market. In this paper, we try to analyze the conditions that the upgradable products are spread by means of the consumer's choice model. The result of the analysis shows that to give information on the products to the end-users, to increase their skills in using the upgradable products and to improve services to support them promote their decision to choose the upgradable products.
