The purpose of this study was to classify the enjoyment of the basketball class for the university students. Using the self-administered questionnaire with the FSS (Flow State Scale), we investigated the structure of the flow state of the students of physical education and sports chair, W university. First, as the results of factor analysis, we extracted 6factors for the structure of the enjoyment of the basketball class: 1) Confidence, 2) Autotelic Experience, 3) Loss of Self-Consciousness, 4) Action-Awareness Merging, 5) Concentration, and 6) Clear goals. Secondly, we divided the survey participants into the skillful and unskillful group (subjectively). And it was revealed that the skillful group tended to acquire the sense of Flow more than the unskillful group, while the participants would experience the sense of Flow in spite of skillful or unskillful.

  • Constraints and constraint negotiation among international masters games participants:A report on Japanese participants in the World Masters Games 2017 Auckland

    Hikoji Kei, Ito Eiji

    Japan Journal of Lifelong Sport ( Japanese Society of Lifelong Sports ) 15 ( 2 ) 49 - 55 2018

     View Summary

The World Masters Games, which is the one of the biggest participant sport events, willbe hosted in Kansai in 2021. The purpose of this report was to explore constraints and constraintnegotiation among Japanese masters games participants in the international masters games. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight Japanese masters athletes in the World MastersGames 2017 Auckland by asking about any problems they experienced (constraints) and thestrategies they adopted to overcome those problems (constraint negotiation). The results revealedthat Japanese participants in the international masters games experienced time constraints relatedto work and family responsibilities. To overcome those constraints, they tried to manage their workschedules (time negotiation) and to gain both understanding and support from their colleaguesand families (interpersonal negotiation) in order to participate in the international masters games.Through a series of interviews, we cognized that Japanese participants in the international mastersgames stood face to face with their constraints to overcome them using their respective strategies.

  • Constraints and Constraint Negotiation when Participating in Domestic and International Masters Games

    Ito Eiji, Hikoji Kei

International Journal of Sport and Health Science ( Japan Society of Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences ) 16 ( 0 ) 120 - 127 2018

     View Summary

Japan will host the Rugby World Cup 2019, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the World Masters Games 2021 Kansai. A total of 30,000 domestic and 20,000 international athletes are expected to participate in the World Masters Games 2021 Kansai. However, little is known about constraints and constraint negotiation among such sport tourists (i.e., masters athletes). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the constraints and constraint negotiation experienced when Japanese masters athletes participate in domestic and international masters games. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five Japanese masters athletes who had participated in both domestic and international (outside of Japan) masters athletic games and who belonged to the prefectural Masters Athletics Association. Thematic analysis of the transcribed data was conducted in an inductive manner. Our results indicated that: (a) time, physiological, and masters-game-specific constraints exist in both domestic and international contexts, while financial and travel constraints exist only in international contexts; (b) family, time, financial, and psychological negotiation exist in both domestic and international contexts; and (c) constraints and constraint negotiation may differ depending upon the nature of participation in the masters games (i.e., the level of involvement and social orientation).
