Investigation of Model Human Processor by EEG Measurement

We repeat the interaction cycle of recognition, judgment and action while practicing skills. The interaction cycle was modeled by Card et al. from the viewpoint of information processing, which is called as Model Human Processor. Model Human Processor can estimate the reaction time of the cycle. However, Model Human Processor does not estimate processing time from the aspect of brain science, but estimates it by empirical model. In this study, we performed four experiments according to Model Human Processor and measured brain activity by Electroencephalography (EEG). As a result of experiments, characteristic EEG was detected. Also, it was found that characteristic EEG was appearing late as well as models delayed cognitive processors of reaction decisions.

In nursing education, it is important that nursing students acquire the appropriate nursing knowledge and skills which include the empirical tacit knowledge of the skilled nurses. Verbalizing them is difficult. We paid attention to the eye tracking at the time of the skill enforcement of expert nurses and the nursing students. It is said that the sight accounts for 70% higher than of all sense information. For the purpose of the learning support of the tacit nursing skill, we analyzed the difference of both including the gaze from an actual measured value with the eye mark recorder. In the results the nurses particularly address the part related to inserting a needle among the other actions, they should move their eyes safely, surely, and economically along with the purposes of their tasks.

Japanese traditional art works, like ceramics painting, need some skills of painting onto three-dimensional objects. Training is needed for a long time to get their skills. Therefore, it is difficult for novices to draw pictures they want. This is the reason that we developed the drawing learning support system using AR. There are two barriers for novice learners to learn drawing, difficulty of fixing their mistakes, and a lot of cost for learning. Using the system, the learner is able to break through these barriers. Our final goal is to develop a skill learning environment for drawing onto 3D objects. The environment assists a learner to get skills for drawing lines keeping uniform width. This skill is available to draw lines with various widths that the learner wants. To accomplish it, the system overlays strokes by AR, and gives advice using text or voices. First, the learner traces strokes overlaid on an object. Next, the system diagnoses the learner's stroke. Finally, the system gives advice to the learner by text or voices. In this paper, we propose and explain the design of the skill learning environment for drawing onto 3D objects using AR. Traditional motion learning support systems have a single piece of motion data as a model motion although the data is not always the best one for learners. There is also a fear that some learners regard the model motion as the absolute one. To solve this problem, we proposed a system showing various model motions to the learners. They can select one of the following model motion; arbitrary coach's motion, the coach's motion whose physique is the most similar to learner's one, the average motion of all coaches and the nearest motion to the average. On the system, learners are able to choose one from these four types as a model motion if the system has some coaches' motion data. In this study, we build a sub-system for displaying the finger motion, and add the sub-system to "Motion Navigator" which is existing motion learning support system. The existing Motion Navigator could not display finger motions but showed limited variation of motion in precedent research. Therefore we acquired finger motion data using data gloves and integrated the finger motion data with whole body motion data of Motion Navigator. The new system is called Motion Navigator II. We verified learning effect of the experimental group using Motion Navigator II in comparison with the control group using conventional learning method with video pictures.

In this paper, we developed a fingerspelling motion skill learning support system using data gloves. The system can reproduce a learner's fingerspelling by 3D modelling. The learner's finger motion data is gotten by data gloves. A learner learns fingerspelling by his/her 3D modellings which is overlaid the expert's 3D modellings. In addition, the system calculates differences between a learner and the expert, and gives advice to a learner by text. We evaluated the system's usability by questionnaire. As the result, we found that we have to improve 3D modellings and reconsider contents of advice.

Recently, the technique 'Eyes Control' has been described in the book that explains drawing style of comics. 'Eyes Control' is to lead flow of the eyes of a reader who chases the picture of the panel on the page. According to the book, it is possible for readers to perceive time and rhythm, etc. as eyes control effect in the comic because the author of the comics controls the flow of reader's eyes. However, this is a hypothesis published by the author of the book based on his experience, and no one has proven it by experiments. Therefore, we prepared comics referred to the example of eyes control in the books, and analyzed readers' eyes flow. Moreover, impression difference between comics with eyes control and without eyes control was evaluated by questionnaire. It is necessary to acquire not only specialized knowledge but also appropriate nursing skills in nursing education. In this paper, we propose an e-learning system model to support a high level of technique learning, such as "tacit knowledge" and "proficient art" in nursing skills, which have been heretofore learned only from experience. This e-learning system enables self-learning in addition to intellectual learning, thereby enhancing knowledge of procedures and understanding of nursing skills. The results of evaluation experiments showed that each system had learning effects. However, simultaneously, they indicated the importance of the capability of self-training with actual trial-and-error to acquire skills. For that reason, adding "check point learning" to the already developed cognitive learning support system as a new function, we made improvements to provide nursing skills training covering detailed items. Based on this, we propose step-by-step learning after completing learning in the cognitive domain through spiral learning, which is the first step (from intellectual learning support to skill learning support again to intellectual learning support), learners move on to the second step (technique learning support) in a phased manner. We think that other evaluation given by instructors by checking between the first and second steps, as well as checking self-leaning, reduces the sense of loneliness, which is a common pitfall an e-learning, and which provides satisfaction with self-learning outcomes and a motivation for additional learning development. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

One is a method of non-dominant motion practice by following reversed dominant motion animation. The other is awareness of non-dominant motion error by dominant body site. We think that both methods are complementary each other. Heretofore, "skill proficiency" in nursing techniques has only been developed through experience. To pass that technical proficiency down to later generations, this study is intended to build a learning support system using virtual reality by reproducing finger movements used in practicing nursing techniques. For practicing blood drawing techniques, we earlier developed a prototype system that uses a finger motion capture system to acquire finger position data when a syringe is grasped. It uses the acquired data to reproduce the process of the techniques three-dimensionally. This paper outlines the prototype system and reports its effectiveness for learning after examining results of a demonstration experiment for nursing students.

Recently, the technique 'Eyes Leading' has been described in the book that explains drawing style of comics. 'Eyes Leading' is to lead flow of the eyes of a reader who chases the picture of the panel on the page. According to the book, it is possible for readers to perceive time and rhythm, etc. as eyes leading effect in the comic because the author of the comics controls the flow of reader's eyes. However, this is a hypothesis published by the author of the book based on his experience, and no one has proven it by an experiment. Therefore, I prepared comics referred to the example of eyes leading in the books, and analyzed readers' eyes motions. Moreover, impression difference between comics with eyes leading and without eyes leading was evaluated by questionnaire. These experiments aimed to verify the effect of the eyes leading in comics.

Proposal and development of reversal motion skill leaning support environment

It is not easy to master reversal motion by himself / herself, because reversal motion uses different muscles that were not used in the dominant motion, and the reversal motion tend to be awkward. Dominant motion means the motion that a learner can play sports naturally with. In this background, we propose reversal motion skill self-learning environment that shows advice based on learner's dominant motion. In this study, we supposed that learners can play with dominant motions almost perfectly but can play poorly with reversal motions. The learners try to improve their reversal motion by referencing reversed dominant motion. In this process, when a learner input his/her reversal motion data, then the self-learning environment shows difference between the reversed dominant motion and reversal motion. The environment also tells how to improve the reversal motion. © 2011 IEEE.

Proposal of collaborative navigation for multi users from different departure points to the same goal

This paper presents a proposal of two new modes of collaborative human navigation. Both are used in a situation in which two users depart from different points simultaneously, but they want to reach common goal. One mode of navigation is used in a situation in which both users want to reach the goal independently. The navigation system calculates each route and arrival time for each user. If the two arrival times differ, then the system suggests another route with a dropping point such as a store or park to the user who will reach the goal earlier. The other navigation is used in a situation in which two users want to join somewhere before reaching a common goal. The navigation system suggests not only a juncture point, but also suggests routes from each departure point to the juncture point, and a route from the juncture point to the goal. We developed a prototype system using the city center of Wakayama as a test area. Using it, we evaluated the proposed navigations. © 2011 Authors.

We developed a real-world oriented mobile constellation learning environment. Learners point at a target constellation by gazing through a cylinder with a gyro-sensor under the real starry sky. The system can display information related to the constellation. The system has original exercise functions which are not supported by existing systems or products by other research group or companies. Goal of this paper is to analyze novices' erhu playing. Erhu is a two-stringed instrument created in China. Hair of stick is located between two strings. Therefore the stick motion is much different from other string instruments such as violin. Firstly, we analyzed erhu playing and clarified parameters to generate noises. Then, we analyzed novices' finger pressures during erhu playing. To achieve this task, we recorded erhu playing by video camera, and measured finger pressures on strings when players are playing erhu. The purpose of the analysis is to examine what kind of errors novice players have, and we will take it into account when we design the learning environment.

This paper describes the index evaluation of the index brain to select snap shot memory on the multiple indexing generation memory model (Indexing Brain Model). It makes multiple indexes for each memory. An image index associates other images. A symbolic index also associates images. Images are recognized into indexes. To select the memory, the system calculates an index evaluation value to evaluate the number of indexes and their index weight, and selects one snap shot memory with high score index evaluation value.

Goal of this paper is to analyze novices' erhu playing. Erhu is a two-stringed instrument created in China. Hair of stick is located between two strings. Therefore the stick motion is much different from other string instruments such as violin. Firstly, we analyzed erhu playing and clarified parameters to generate noises. Then, we analyzed novices' finger pressures during erhu playing. To achieve this task, we recorded erhu playing by video camera, and measured finger pressures on strings when players are playing erhu. The purpose of the analysis is to examine what kind of errors novice players have, and we will take it into account when we design the learning environment. © 2010 IEEE.

Through experimentation and analyses of apple peeling, we examined the implicit knowledge necessary to perform study support for exercise and performance. A pressure sensor, an eye-mark recorder, a miniature wireless camera, and a surface electromyography were used to assess actions of 10 examinees (6 men, 4 women) during an experiment, which revealed three main differences between experts and non-experts: holding of the kitchen knife using the index finger to the little finger, use of the right thumb, and holding the apple with the left hand. Results show that securely holding the apple and the kitchen knife is important. Finally, we designed the skill learning support system. © 2010 IEEE.

We developed an interactive learning environment for imitative figure sketching. Figure sketching is more difficult for novice than other sketching. People can easily find errors of figure sketch, since human is sensitive to human body figure. There are some important points to draw figure sketch. In this paper, We focus on length and angle between junctions. After learners draw human body figure by imitative sketching, the learning environment diagnoses the lengths and angles between junctions of drawn figure sketch. The environment shows scores of the learners' figure sketch and some advice. We evaluated the environment with some learners.

We have been developing some learning environments for acquiring sketch drawing skill. Previously developed system supported learning with real-time advice during drawing the sketch. However, the previous system forced learners to draw contours of motifs from the beginning. Therefore, it was difficult for novice to learn sketch drawing skill with the previous system. To solve this problem, we suggest a new learning environment that supports learning of sketch drawing skill by guiding process of drawing sketch from composition to contour. We confirmed learning effect with the prototype system by an experiment.

We developed learning environment for stars and constellations with finger pointing under real night sky. This environment has some functions. First function is star name telling function. When a learner points a finger at a star with the sensor on his/her finger top, the system tells him/her name of the star and constellation with voice. Then, second function is star navigation function. If the learner know the name of a star, but he/she does not know where it is in the real sky, the system shows the path from current pointing position to the target star. These two basic functions can be used by single learner, but also used collaborative learners. Third function is constellation tutoring function. The system asks questions about stars and constellations to learners. A learner answers the question by pointing at real star, and then the system corrects it. This function can be used for collaborative learners. Fourth function is collaborative focus point indication. Every learner uses each learning environment for his/her own, and every learning environment communicates each other. Every environment indicates the other learner's pointed star. Learners can know easily where the other learner points a finger at in the sky, and collaborate learning easily.

We developed the planetary simulator that is able to simulate astronomical phenomena in the solar system. The planetary simulator can set not only target planet but also the planet of viewpoint. It can simulate planets' revolutions around the sun fixing viewpoint on another planet. Therefore it can help generalized understanding of wax and wane of inner planets. The planetary simulator also supports viewpoint guiding function for self-learning. Moreover, the planetary simulator shows a small dynamic guide map that shows current learner's viewpoint, target and scope. Finally, We developed the function by which a learner can perform the virtual experiment in the simulator to understand Kepler's laws of planets' revolutions.

To provide an environment helpful to make a picture is one of important research subjects in order to make our life rich spiritually. We have been developing an environment for basic sketch learning. Because basic sketching is considered as training for realistic representation, we consider that novices' sketches can be evaluated with comparison of the sketches and the portrayed objects. The proposed environment aids users in learning a basic sketch using real pencils and drawing paper. We adopted the three step method of drawing: outline, half tone, and three grades of light and shade. After drawing, coloring applies. The prototype system deals with a sketch in each step. The input data to the system are a motif data set and an image of user's sketch. The output is advice to the user. The previous system can process pencil drawing of a tumbler and a plate. We are expanding the target to colored sketches of fruits. The current system gives advice on sketches of simple fruits motifs. The proposed system would be useful not only for the support of self-educated novices but also for the auxiliary role of teachers in mass schooling.

Skill knowledge is important human knowledge as well as symbolic knowledge. Definition of skill knowledge is knowledge on high level technique that human acquire through repeated training. Skill knowledge is needed for arts, sports and crafts. It concerns human body structure, muscles, and joints. Also, skill knowledge concerns process of human interaction with objects, namely, recognition and action. There are many researches on learning support system for describable knowledge, such as mathematics, physics, grammar, etc. However, there is few pieces of research on learning support system for skill such as arts and sports. This paper analyses skills and generalize skill features. Then we describe problems to diagnose skill errors. After that, we introduce a learning support system for sketch as an example of a skill learning support environment.

Currently, there is no system that can improve users' skill to draw pictures, although many digital tools for pictures are provided. We have been paying attention to pencil sketch which is a basis of art activities. We developed a study support system for beginners' pencil sketches of a plate and a glass. The motif, a plate and a glass, is good for learning basic sketches. It is, however, not interesting for learners usually. We propose a system for beginners' pencil sketches of fruit. The system evaluates sketches in each phase of outline and shading the same as the previous system. In this paper, we explain the details of the system for outline sketches of fruit which has different processing from the previous system. We also report the result of the evaluation experiment.

Physical skills and language skills are both fundamental intelligent abilities of human being. In this paper, we focus our attention to such sophisticated physical skills as playing sports and playing instruments and introduce research activities aiming at elucidating and verbalizing them. This research area has been launched recently. We introduce approaches from physical modeling, measurements and data analysis, cognitive science and human interface. We also discuss such issues as skill acquisition and its support systems. Furthermore, we consider a fundamental issue of individual differences occurring in every application of skill elucidation. Finally we introduce several attempts of skill elucidation in the fields of dancing, manufacturing, playing string instruments, sports science and medical care.

A picture is one of important research subjects in order to make our life spiritually rich. Most studies on pictures, however, only propose some substitute functions of actual drawing or painting materials. There is no system that evaluates pictures drawn by users and gives advice about them. We propose an educational software for beginners in basic pencil drawing. Our system receives a subject (motif) data set and an image of a user's sketch and returns advice to the user. The processing is composed of the four functions: feature extraction of motifs, feature extraction of sketches, error identification, and generation and presentation of advice. We developed and experimented a prototype system limited to treat a basic motif and some principal advice. 現在,心を豊かにすることに関する研究がさまざまな分野で行われている.その対象の1 つとして絵画がある.絵画に関する研究は数多く行われているが,実際の画材の代替機能に関するものが主流であり,描かれた絵画を評価し,描き方を指導するシステムは存在しない.そこで,絵画の基本であるデッサンに対象をしぼり,初心者が画用紙に鉛筆で描くデッサンの学習支援システムを提案する.提案システムは,デッサン画像とモチーフ情報とを入力とし,評価およびアドバイスをユーザへ返すものである.その処理は,デッサンの特徴抽出,モチーフの特徴抽出,デッサンの誤りの同定,アドバイスの生成と提示の4 つの機能で行われる.モチーフを皿とジョッキに限定し,構図や形状に関する主要なアドバイス11 項目の処理を行うプロトタイプシステムを作成して試用実験を行い,提案システムの有効性を確認した.

We developed a remote telescope system. Students can observe celestial bodies witb live pictare with the remote telescope system tbrougb Internet. If they use it from opposite side of the earth, they can see the live picture of celestial bodies in the day time by time difference. We also developed virtual planetarium, virtual telescope, and moon interface. By using them, novice students can use the system more easily with scientific interest. Moreover we also developed a management system for multi-user mode. We evaluated the systems.

We developed a remote meteorological observation system and interactive data publishing system on the web. Meteorological sensors collect data and send it to the DBMS. When students retrieve past data on the web, the data are brought with XML. Therefore the data can be transformed by XSLT with XSL style format in accordance with students' demand. The system has flexible GUI by using XML. Also the system can generate some pairs of problem and answer automatically to learn meteorology. This system will contribute to science education.

When we do aerial photography and an environmental research, a remote control helicopter (R/C helicopter) is excellent tool in the next point. For example, the cost of aerial photography and an environmental research work by R/C helicopter are low, also R/C helicopter pilot reservation fee are low price, and free from aviation law in Japan. But, R/C helicopter maneuvering and aerial photographing skills are necessary, and these are difficult to learn. Additionally, if the visibility of R/C helicopter is getting bad when it goes far away, operation is getting difficult. These problems are caused by the badness of autonomous stability on R/C helicopter system. In this study, we propose a new angle detection sensor for 3 axial rotations which is based on the development of the easy and safe steering system for the operation person.

The proposal of the technique of error visualization for a learner's pencil drawing

In a pencil drawing class, a teacher explains often the differences between a drawing and a motif by many ways
even so, it is difficult for most learners to understand the existence of errors in his/her drawing. When a learner watches the 3D model of his/her drawing from appropriate viewpoints, he/she is immediately aware of the errors. This paper describes the technique of error visualization from a learner's erroneous drawing. We developed a drawing advice system that consists of a 3D model converter from a 2D image and an evaluation function to estimate the effect of the 3D model. We designed a geometrical formula that expresses the relation between the geometrical feature and the error expression in the teacher's advice.

Hue algorithm for plant healthiness monitoring using multispectral infrared camera system

Environment preservations of the forest become world-widely close-up. The remote sensing technologies by satellite have been used for observation of the forest. However, the observation system on the ground is also needed because the remote sensing by satellite is seriously hindered by atmospheric phenomena and detailed data are necessary for precise analysis of the state of forest. Therefore we developed a multispectral infrared camera system for plant healthiness monitoring. The infrared camera system has five infrared bandpass filters. A hue is defined from the five infrared images. We performed several experiments to confirm that the hue changes according as the plant healthiness decline. In this paper, we propose a plant healthiness evaluation method by detecting hue changes with time. Experimental results of observation of hue changes of a plant through a day using the multispectral infrared camera system are shown. The results show that hue in healthiness parts of plants are more stable than in weak pans when the circumambient conditions such as the sunshine condition are changed.

So the observation system on the ground is needed. In this paper, we develop a multispectral infrared camera system to investigate the continuous spectra of mid-range infrared whose wavelengths cover around 3000nm to 5000nm. We define hue value in the case that the number of primary image is more than three. An algorithm to calculate the hue value from multispectral infrared images is proposed to obtain spectrum change of plants. An experiment of observation using the multispectral infrared camera system when the plant is growing week from cutting water off is shown.

本研究では,リモート望遠鏡システムに仮想天文台を融合した先進的なリモート天文台システムについて提案している.仮想天文台とは,三次元仮想空間内にプラネタリウムと仮想望遠鏡モデルを配置し,リモート天文台システムのGUIとして,また,星座や天体の天文教育にも利用できるシステムである.一般に遠隔地のユーザは,望遠鏡の動きや望遠鏡が設置されている場所の星空がわからないので,このプラネタリウムで星空を表示する.その中の天体を選択すると,実際の望遠鏡がその天体をとらえると同時に,仮想望遠鏡モデルがその動きをシミュレートする.また,各種望遠鏡の構造,振舞い,機能を学習できるシステムも提案している.

本研究では,月が公転運動において星座の中を動いてゆくときに,背後の星を隠す現象である星食を利用して,月の公転運動を学習する方法を提案している.具体的には,和歌山県美里町のみさと天文台と,岡山県美星町の美星天文台において,同じ日に起こった1等星のアルデバランの星食をそれぞれ観測し,時刻表示を含めたビデオ撮影した.二つの天文台は,直線でおよそ200kmほど離れているため,月に対しては視差が生じるので,星を隠す瞬間の時刻や,月面上の隠れる場所に違いが生じる.この違いを解析することにより,月の公転運動の様子と月までの距離を求めることが可能となり,そのための天文教育の教材を提案している.

本研究では,遠隔操作機器を用いてインターネットを利用して観察学習を行う学習環境の一般的枠組みについて述べている.特に,リモート望遠鏡を利用して天文学習を行う学習環境を例として取り上げ,学習目標,学習プラン,教材ベース,GUIベースなどの,学習環境を構成する要素について論じている.将来,フルリモートコントロール可能なインタラクティブ・リモート望遠鏡システム等の遠隔操作機器が実現された場合,教師なしの自習システムに観察学習を取り入れることが可能になる.そのとき,その遠隔操作機器に,いかに知的な学習支援システムの構築方法を融合させるかを提案している.

Solving fill-in-blank program problems is accompanied by understanding the programs. This paper discusses how to promote the program understanding with the problems. A student will bear a cognitive load in filling in the blanks. The load depends on how to make blanks in the programs. In this paper, we present a fill-in-blank problem that provides two blanks, called main blank and sub-blank. The load to be imposed on a student' s blank-filling process can be controlled by the relationship between the main blank and sub-blank. This paper also demonstrates an authoring system that produces fill-in-blank problems and an ITS that interactively assists a student in filling the blanks.

The ability to retrieve by similarity is one powerful way to improve the human interface in an image database. In this paper, graphic patterns constructed as a set of primitive patterns formed from closed regions are the target images. When recognizing this kind of graphic pattern, people perform grouping. The partial patterns formed by this grouping play a major role in the similarity between graphic patterns. Consequently, the partial patterns that result from grouping must be introduced into the image representation as search keys. Furthermore, it would be desirable to have this representation automatically generated. In this paper, we propose a method where a representation in the part‐of hierarchy of partial patterns is used as the graphic pattern representation
this representation is generated from the raw image of the graphic pattern. This method uses the rules for visual characteristics for grouping in humans. First, partial patterns are formed by bottom‐up processing. Then, by comparing the stability of the final partial patterns, partial patterns that do not match human perception are deleted and missing partial patterns are searched for and added. 群化に基づく図形パターンの階層表現の生成

家紋やマークなどの構造を持つ図形パターンを対象とした画像データベースにおいて,ヒューマン・インタフェースを考慮した類似検索を可能にするため,画像データの検索キーの生成に,人間の視覚特性である群化を取り入れ,図形パターンの階層表現を生成する手法について論じた.また,試作システムを通じて手法の妥当性を検証した.従来の類似検索では,図形パターンにメッシュを切り,その特徴量間の類似度を定義して,検索を行うのが普通で,人間の視覚特性は取り入れられていなかった.本論文では,視覚特性を取り入れることにより,より人間の感覚に近い類似検索の手法を提案した.
