     View Summary

This paper intends to clarify the mechanism of CSV (creating shared value) as a socially responsible business (SRB), which is expressed as the strategic corporate responsibility, put forward by Porter and Kramer. CSV is based on the logic of Porter's strategic positioning approach. Through enlargement of shared value, CSV pursues the maximization of profit of both business and society by a positive feedback mechanism. CSV emphasizes the business view that involves social benefit and/or profit, is orientated toward the maximization of the right kind of profit, and suggests to integrate CSR into business strategy. However the purpose of CSV is not to promote CSR. CSV is only utilizing some elements of social dimensions in which CSR has been regarded as important, to reinforce the strategic position for getting a competitive advantage. For CSV, CSR is only the means to reinforce the uniqueness of the strategic positioning.

     View Summary

This paper considers the relation with the style of stakeholder integration to the character of legitimacy of business and innovations. It is that the style of stakeholder integration might influence the character of business as such. Recently, it is thought that stakeholders give the legitimacy to businesses. However, there are two logics to identify stakeholders. Therefore, the character of legitimacy given to the businesses is different according to whether the relation to what stakeholders is assumed. Moreover, the nature of the relation to stakeholders influences not only the legitimacy of the businesses, but also the character of the innovation that is produced by the businesses. To clarify these, this paper examines the following three tasks; the concept of legitimacy of business; the logic of identification of stakeholders; the way of stakeholder integration. Finally, this paper points out that the way of stakeholder integration or organizing stakeholders influences a given legitimacy and a driven innovations.

  • Transition and the Shift of Perspective on CSR

    Takaoka, Nobyuki

    Journal of Business Management ( Japan Academy of Business Administration )  13 ( 13 ) 3 - 16   2005  [Refereed]

     View Summary

The present paper deals with changes and shifts of perspective of corporate social responsibility, or corporate understanding of CSR. According to Frederick (1986, 1994, 1998a), the ways of thinking of CSR can be categorized into four types: CSR1 (corporate social responsibility), CSR2 (corporate social responsiveness), CSR3 (corporate social rectitude), and CSR4 (cosmos, science, religion). Basically, CSR1 prescriptively identifies the content of the social responsibility of the corporation as a social institution and the basis of its justification; CSR2 discusses how to effectively fulfill those various responsibilities; CSR3 judges ethical and social consistency in an organization's decision-making and other behaviors in relation to its social responsibilities. In CSR2 and CSR3, how to fulfill the corporate social responsibilities as a business organization and its quality are discussed. The changes of CSR1-2-3 can be understood as a series of transformation on a continuous line, while CSR4 accompanies a paradigm shift in the ways of thinking. CSR4, which has come under a rather strong influence of the science of complex systems, is characterized by breaking off from its corporate-centered point of view and a separatist or dichotomous viewing business and society. The present paper reveals the differences and shifts of CSR perspectives by comparing CSR4 with CSR1-2-3 as well as by considering the logic for the concept of CSR4. In other words, it deals with characteristics of four CSR perspectives and differences between CSR1-2-3 and CSR4. It, furthermore, develops Frederick's views and also refers to the scope and possibilities of CSR4 in irradiating corporate social responsibility phenomena.

    Takaoka, Nobyuki

Annual review of economics, Faculty of Economics, Nagasaki Univ., ( Nagasaki University )  20   37 - 51   2004.03

     View Summary

Carroll (1995, p.71) has argued that 'stakeholder thinking is a powerful way of visualizing organizations and their social responsibilities'. In general, we agree to his view. However, there are two styles in stakeholder thinking. It includes intrinsic stakeholder thinking and strategic stakeholder one. Each style quite differs in how to identify stakeholders, especially nature of identified stakeholders, and how to deal with the identified stakeholders. Which styles of thinking are useful for visualizing the social responsibilities in businesses? This paper unfolds the constitution of stakeholder thinking to provide a compass to the question.

This article identifies the character of green-consumerism as a social movement. Although consumerism as a social movement is characterized by the claim for rights of consumers-own-self, that is, self-interest for consumers, the green-con-sumerism is characterized by the consideration and responsibility toward others. Accordingly, the meaning of the action as a consumer differs also with normal consumerism. The performance of green-consumers is characterized by pro-sociality. The pro-sociality is based on the reflection on which the action of consumotion of consumers influences on others or society. This article identifies these two character to develop a alternative perspective on business environment.

  • The Deconstruction on Stakeholder Model of the Corporation

Takaoka, Nobyuki, Taniguchi,Eugene (Part: Corresponding author )

    Journal of Business Management ( Japan Academy of Business Administration )  9 ( 9 ) 14 - 25   2003.01  [Refereed]

     View Summary

In this paper, we try to deconstruct on the existing stakeholder model of the modern corporation. The stakeholder model has been a fundamental framework in business and society. Based on this model, many of stakeholder theorists have developed a management theory and a theory of the firm. The stakeholder model is used to attain two separate aims. On one hand, it is applied in the field of stakeholder management aiming at effective management, where focus is placed on the differentiation of each stakeholder. On the other hand, it is also applied as theory of the firm aiming at verification of stakeholder legitimacy, where emphasis is placed on the integration of each stakeholder. Thus, the logic of the stakeholder model is different by application. This model is so far formed on the assumption that the environment of corporations is composed of nothing but stakeholders, where the relationship between the corporation and stakeholders is consequently regarded as a relationship between the corporation and society. This duality of the model's application can be attributed to the treatment of stakeholders in the model. In the model, the stakeholder group is classified in terms of the influence on businesses of the stake, where the stakeholders are treated solely based on functionalism from the viewpoint of the corporation. The existing stakeholder model might bring about a distortional perspective of the relationship between the corporation and society, or of the roles of business in society. We criticize these problems as a pitfall of the existing stakeholder model. Hence, an alternative model which transforms the existing stakeholder model by placing the two constituents of the stakeholder concept on separate dimensions is presented. To reveal the logic of the transformation is our primary task in this paper.

     View Summary

There are two different paradigms in viewing corporate environmental behavior: the first is Corporate Environmentalism, and the second is Sustainable Development. The purpose of this paper is to consider how to deconstruct the perspectives of environmental issues in business administration and management theories, with showing the varieties of perspectives in terms of corporate environmental behavior in these two paradigms. Fist, we consider transformation of corporate environmental Management style in the frame of Corporate Environmentalism from the viewpoint of eco-efficiency as the update style. In addition, eco-efficiency is also one of a style of sustainability concept in business fields asserted by WBCSD (World Business Council for Sustainable Development). There are two alternative styles in the frame of Sustainable Development; social-sustainability and ecological-sustainability. We focus on these styles to consider how to deconstruct the perspectives of environmental issues.
