The off-flavor taste of tap water due to 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) derived from blue algae is one of the water quality problems associated with high nutrient loads in the Kinokawa River. Existing monitoring data showed that 2-MIB concentrations tended to increase when total phosphorus (TP) concentrations exceeded 0.02 mg/L. This study employed mass load and river water quality analyses to examine ways in which TP loads in river runoff could be mitigated. The results suggested that TP mass loads could be reduced by approximately half if the drainage volume standards defined in the Water Pollution Control Law were more stringent. In addition, halving current mass loads could reduce TP concentrations to less than 0.015 mg/L and limit any increases in the concentration of 2- MIB.

The Takihata water purification plant started in August 2003. Trihalomethane concentration in drinking water has been the major issue since the start of the plant operation. Therefore, demonstration experiments were conducted in order to investigate the reduction of the trihalomethane concentration by aeration in a distributing reservoir of the plant. The experimental results showed that the trihalomethane concentration decreased exponentially with increased amount of aeration. Meanwhile, the aeration can not remove organic substances in clear water and so the trihalomethane concentration increases again in a water distribution network. This means that it is important to manage the concentration at the end of the network. Therefore, an estimating equation for the concentration in the network was developped using monitoring data. Model analysis using the estimating equation suggested that the aeration in the distributing reservoir enabled a water supply of good quality in the Takihata waterworks system.

Characteristics of total phosphorus (TP) concentrations in the Kinokawa River were clarified by using existing monitoring data. Numerical analysis to examine mass loads and river water quality were also conducted. The monitoring data showed that the TP concentrations increased markedly in the middle river reaches from 1996 to 2001. The numerical analysis also demonstrated large increases in industrial TP loads from 1996 to 1999, as well as decreases in TP due to reductions in industrial shipments and the promulgation of the fifth regulation of total maximum daily loading. The findings suggested that industrial TP loads and the river flow rate both affected TP concentrations in the river.

The transport processes of groundwater contamination by organoarsenic compounds was examined on a large scale in Kamisu City, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, using a three-dimensional numerical simulation. The results of the 3-D numerical simulation revealed that groundwater contamination had spread approx. 3 km downstream from the contaminant source and also that groundwater extraction from industrial wells located downstream of the study area had limited the spread of the groundwater contamination until the operation of some wells stopped.
