This paper evaluated the results of a field test for grou ndwater remediation by in-situ bioremediation at a site contaminated by tetrachloroethylene. The technique carried out in this test uses reductive dechlorination of contaminant in a subsurface environment. In the observation well during the field test, the percentages of daughter products like dichloroethylenes were observed to increase with the rise in reductive condition of the aquifer. Moreover, it was shown that the first order rate constants of all substances became greater than those of natural groundwater by more than a few orders. This meant that the reductive dechlorinataions could be accelerated during the field test.

Water quality of the Kinokawa River has not been satisfied with the Japanese environmental quality standard. Then, origins of pollution of Kinokwa River were analyzed by L-Q equation and pollutant load per unit production using a field survey result and previous data. As a result, BOD and T-N values calculated from L-Q method were in good agreement with those calculated from pollutant load unit production method. The difference of T-P values between two methods was twice. Pollutant load source was estimated by pollutant load per unit production method. Main sources of BOD, T-N, and T-P in Kinokawa catchments were estimated to be domestic sewage, orchard, and industrial wastewater respectively. Comparing lower and upper stream of Kinokawa catchments, main sources of BOD and T-P in the upper stream were forest. Main sources of BOD and T-P in the lower stream were domestic sewage and industrial wastewater. Main sources of T-N in both streams were orchards. Therefore, each main source was various and comprehensive plan is necessary for controlling river water quality.

The flux of NO<SUP>-</SUP><SUB>3</SUB> and BOD values in the Yamato river water directly increased with precipitation. Therefore, the NO<SUP>-</SUP><SUB>3</SUB> was considered to originate mainly from fertilizer (A) because it was reported that the flux of NO<SUP>-</SUP><SUB>3</SUB>in farmland drainage increased with precipitation, although domestic sewage (B) also contains a lot of NO<SUP>-</SUP><SUB>3</SUB>. As sediments in the river channels and drains containing organic compounds migrated on rainy days, river BOD values are considered to increase after rain. On the other hand, NO<SUP>-</SUP><SUB>3</SUB>origins in branch rivers of the Yamato river are various combinations of (A) and (B). The NO<SUP>-</SUP><SUB>3</SUB>origins of branch rivers were determined by whether the flux of NO<SUP>-</SUP><SUB>3</SUB> increased with the flow rate or not. On the other hand, CF concentration in the Yamato river water is considered to strongly depend on the amount of domestic sewage. Although the flow rate in the river changed remarkably due to heavy rains, the flux of CF remained unchanged because the volume of domestic sewage did not change even on a rainy day.

It is important that it makes clear the cyclic process of water and water balance for the river basin. However water quality was changed by types of land use and geologic structure. In this study, we have compared the water chemistry of the Ishikawa river which land for housing makes rapid progress, with that of the Satsunai river which there are almost agricultural land. In the Satsunai river, the NO₃^- concentration found in the middle stream water of farmland were thought to have come from fertilizer. The Cl^- concentration is influenced the difference of population in the river basin. By analysis of oxygen and hydrogen isotopic ratios, the effect of geographic latitude is confirmed by comparing the Ishikawa river basin with the Satsunai river.
