  • DISTRIBUTION CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ANNUAL NITROGEN LOAD IN YAMATO RIVER BASIN IN 2011

    Although there was not enough data to calculate the amount of nitrogen load in the Yamato River basin, some estimation methods were applied for calculation. The estimation of flow rate was made using a calculation of the cross section and velocity using a new method to estimate velocity from cross section and water level values based upon the modified Manning equation. The estimation of total nitrogen concentration was calculated using EC and water level values or flow rate. As a result, the annual total nitrogen load at Kashiwara, Fujii, Itahigashi, Hota, Shintatsuta, Nukatabetakabashi, and Kamihanda stations and the Nara sewage treatment plant were estimated to be 1856, 1793, 751, 498, 260, 188, 83 and 481t/year in 2011. The amounts of total nitrogen load from two sewage treatment plants reached 900t/year, about 45% of those at the Yamato River basin. The annual total nitrogen load at Kashiwara Station under flood conditions with over 24m(3)/sec of flow rate and excluding flood conditions were calculated to be 835 and 1021t/year in 2011. The annual total nitrogen load at Fujii Station was calculated to be 1013t/year under flood conditions with over 22m(3)/sec of flow rate and excluding flood conditions to be 780t/year in 2011.

    The Werribee River, groundwater and Melbourne's treated sewage effluent (or recycled water) are used for irrigation water in the Werribee Delta. Groundwater beneath the Werribee delta may be contaminated by the recycled water. The mixing ratios of the sea water, upstream groundwater and recycled waters for delta groundwater were calculated from water chemistry. The mixing ratio of the recycled water varied from 10 to 30 % at all depths and delta groundwater was found to be largely comprised by irrigated recycled water. The NO - contamination of delta groundwater is thought to be caused by recycled water and agricultural use of fertilizers. A high mixing ratio of sea water was found at 30 m in depth and this zone was thought to be a salt-water wedge. © 2012, International Journal of GEOMATE. 3

    The phytoplankton and their species were analyzed in the Otaki dam, the Sarutani dam and the Kinokawa flood gate. The Otaki dam, the Sarutani dam and the Kinokawa flood gate are stagnant condition. Ca<SUP>+</SUP> concentrations in the Otaki dam and the Kinokawa flood gate were over 11 mg/l. Ca<SUP>+</SUP> concentration in the Sarutani dam was equal to or less than 10 mg/l. Total nitrogen concentration in the Kinokawa flood gate was over 0.8 mg/l. Total nitrogen concentration in the Otaki dam and the Sarutani dam was equal to or less than 0.7 mg/l. In summer season blue-green algae increased in the Kinokawa flood gate but dinoflagellate did not increase. On the other hand, dinoflagellate increased in the Otaki dam. Then, blue-green algae increased, when total nitrogen concentration is over 0.8 mg/l. Dinoflagellate increased, when Ca<SUP>+</SUP> concentration is over 11 mg/l.

    From water chemistry and oxygen and hydrogen stable isotopes, origin of spring water within the Kushiro Moor was estimated. Water chemistries of the spring water within the Kushiro Moor are different from those of river water within the Kushiro Moor. Stable isotopes in the spring water are relatively lower than those of the surrounding river water and are in agreement with those in the upper stream of the river at the north of Kushiro Moor. Therefore, the recharge area of spring water within the Kushiro Moor is thought to be at the north of the Kushiro Moor.

    Origin of hot spring water in the Yakushima island was clarified using δD and δ<SUP>1</SUP><SUP>8</SUP>O values and Cl<SUP>-</SUP>. δD and δ<SUP>1</SUP><SUP>8</SUP>O values and Cl<SUP>-</SUP>concentrations of river water in the Yakushima island showed zonation. Both δD and δ<SUP>1</SUP><SUP>8</SUP>O values and Cl<SUP>-</SUP>concentrations decreased with increase of height because of isotope effect and sea salt migration caused by air. <BR>δD and δ<SUP>1</SUP><SUP>8</SUP>O values and Cl<SUP>-</SUP>concentrations of two hot spring waters were in agreement with those in river waters at 600 to 800 m in height and 1200 m in height respectively. Therefore two hot spring waters were thought to derive from river waters 600 to 800 m in height and 1200 m in height. As hot spring temperature calculated from both the normal geothermal gradients in Japan and altitude differences between recharge area and hot springs can reach actual temperature, thermal origin of hot spring does not need volcanic activity.

    Fe concentrations in the brook and pond water around the Sumisyonisi district in Kagawa prefecture were extremely high and some of the brook water reached over 50 mg/L. Fe concentrations of soil and plants were also analyzed to determine the Fe origin. Fe concentrations of brook and pond water were high along the upper stream and decreased down the stream. In particular, Fe concentrations of the upper stream water at the marsh surrounded by the forest were high. Reductive and low pH condition caused by decomposition of organic compounds such leaves was thought to increase Fe solubility. Fe concentrationsoftreeleavesaroundtheforestw (as) ere very low although Fe concentrations of leaves of water plant were high. As Fe in soil and weathered rock were easily soluble in reduction and low pH condition, the origin of Fe in water was thought to be soil and weathered rock.
