     View Summary

This article proposes a search method applied to a tree structure that each link cost is larger than the cost of its precedent link along the path from root node to each leaf node. The proposed method searches the tree structure, updating the estimation of link cost based on the actual value of its precedent link cost. It is proved that the proposed method is able to find an optimal solution. And it is also proved that the number of expanded nodes by the proposed method in finding the solution is less than or equal to the number of expanded nodes by A* algorithm. Results of simulation using...

    KNOWLEDGE-BASED AND INTELLIGENT INFORMATION AND ENGINEERING SYSTEMS, PT II ( SPRINGER-VERLAG BERLIN )  6277   611 - 619   2010  [Refereed]

     View Summary

In this article, behavior of a heuristic search with a. heuristic function divided into two parts is discussed based on a geometric analysis, and a method for improving the heuristic function is proposed. One part of the divided heuristic function is called short-term forecast. Another part is called long-term forecast. Based on the discussion, it is suggested there exists a possibility that the difference of accuracy of both forecasts leads the search to an incorrect path. Since there exists a possibility that the search becomes efficient and that the search does not select an incorrect path by improving accuracy of a long-term forecast, a method to update the value of a long-term forecast is proposed. It is shown that the proposed method is effective under the tree structure which cost of the edge observed at deep location is greater or equal than that observed at shallow location.

  • Mobile Robot Navigation Considering Ambiguities in Landmark Recognition

    JRSJ ( The Robotics Society of Japan )  第 17 巻 第 7 号 993-1000 ( 7 ) 993 - 1000   1999  [Refereed]

     View Summary

We discuss mobile robot navigation under linguistic instructions of a route. The instructions given to the robot describe the route using landmarks such as intersections, for example, "turn right at the 2nd intersection, and …."However, it is difficult to give the robot landmark models so that it recognizes each landmark properly as a human does. We have already proposed an algorithm for mobile robot navigation, which verifies the result of landmark recognition considering the positional relationship among landmarks. In this paper, we describe the motion planning to acquire additional information effectively for navigation of the mobile robot equipped with a range sensor based on the algorithm, aiming at realizing the real robot navigation using the linguistic instructions. The environment is described by a graph based on skeletons of its free space. The motion of the robot is first roughly planned with the graph-based global map and then precisely planned with a geometric local sensory information. In experimental results using a real robot, the robot reached the goal specified by the instructions despite of errors in sensing and motion.

     View Summary

In this article, we discuss mobile robot navigation an unknown environment based on linguistic description of a route. We assume that the route of navigation is given by a linguistic description such as "turn right at the 2nd intersection, and ・・・," based on landmarks represented by intersections. Since it is difficult to give the robot landmark models that gurantee correct landmark recognition in advance, we propose to realize correct landmark recognition by considering positional relations among landmarks. We also propose to learn correct landmark recognition from the results of navigation to customize the robot more useful.

In this article, we discuss communication of a route for mobile robot navigation in an unknown environment between a human and a robot. We assume that the route of navigation is given by a symbolic description such as "turn right at the 2nd corner, and…," based on landmarks represented by corners. Since it is difficult to give the robot landmark models that guarantee correct landmark recognition, we intend to get more correct route by means of acquiring positional relations among landmarks to reinforce the ambiguous recognition of landmarks. From the results of the navigation, the robot learns the correct landmark models.
