    There have been many studies of the rural uprisings that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) carried out during the Civil War period.Previous Studies have considered this period of the revolution from a variety of viewpoints,but little attention has been paid to the consequences of socio-economic conditions particular to rural north China during that period.This article seeks to further our understanding of he history of the Chinese Revolution by examining the relationsho between socio-economic conditions and CCP revolutionary polities.After the end of the Sino-Japanese war,the CCP adopted a combination of the anti-traitor movement and the rent & interest reduction movement,constituting a two-pronged approach to the expansion and consolidation of the liberated areas.Owing to their long experience under the Japanese occupation,peasants participated enthusiastically in the anti-traitor movement.On the other hand,the rent & interest reduction movement fell short of CCP expectations,because there were few landlords and few tenants on the north China plain,and landlord-tenant conflict was minimal.The leaders of CCP thought that the rent & interest reduction movement was more important than the anti-traitor movement,since the former was a class-struggle that could liberate peasants,while the latter was not.The CCP leadership thought that the peasants themselves naturally had a "fighting spirit",and blamed the failure of the rent & interest reduction movement on their own rural cadres.As a result,these cadres becames subject to intense psychological pressure,and in some cases disciplinary action.Under these circumstances,the CCP's tural cadres in early 1946 adopted a new understanding of the rural revolition.They regarded traitors as feudal lords,and interpreted the anti-traitor movement as an anti-feudal struggle.This new understanding deviated from the CCP's original theory of revolution,but resulted in a substantial increase in "the anti-feudal struggle"repoted.Faced with this situation,the leaders approved this new understanding as an official understanding of the rural revolution,and issued the May Fourth Directive.

    The peasant smallholder, supplementing his income with a side job, has been a characteristic feature of modern rural China. Such peasants have variously been described as typifying "retrogression", "stagnation", or "development" in the framework of the "differentiation of peasantry" model. Today, however, that model is subject to serious doubt. The purpose of this paper is to examine transitions in the Chinese peasantry through a factual area study, focusing on the notion of the peasant smallholder with a side job as a representation of an economic condition of a Chinese peasant. The paper looks at Ding county (定県), Hebei province CRAM, in the early 1930s. At the time, the population of this region was engaged in diverse farming activities, largely determined by the various types of soil in Ding county. Peasants generally practiced single cropping of minor grains and raw cotton while three crops of major grains were taken over a two-year cycle. These cropping systems were accompanied by two types of cotton production : for domestic use in "grain areas", and for sale in "cotton areas". For the former, cotton handicrafts were a relatively unimportant element in the household economy, but for the latter, they were essential. In each household economy, we can witness a visible tendency toward diminution of the acreage devoted to cotton cultivation, in tandem with the commercialization of cotton handicrafts. However, we cannot accept the widely held explanation of the reduction of per-capita cultivated acreage as a simple outcome of population increase. A fuller explanation must take into consideration the peculiarity of commercialized cotton handicrafts, which depended heavily on soil type, and also on cotton-cropping practices and the mode of employment of the male labor force. Thus our investigation draws us to a recognition of the significance of prevalent conditions in each area. This approach will lead us to a view that sees the integration of the peasant economy into commercialized cotton handicrafts as the main factor in diminishing cultivated acreage. An increase in family income resulted from engaging in commercialized cotton handicrafts, giving rise to the institution of "partial inheritance", which in its turn led to the reduction of cultivated acreage. This will adequately explain the socio-economic development of the Chinese peasantry, resulting in the emergence of the peasant smallholder with a side job as a characteristic figure of modern rural China.

    The purpose of this paper is to examine economic change in farming districts in modern north China, focusing on the shift in the relative importance of farming and off-farm occupations in different peasant households. After the construction of the Beijing-Hankou railroad in Ding county in 1900, in one particular area that was both situated along the railroad and suitable for cotton cultivation, peasant households began to use their male labor force to produce cotton handicrafts for sale. In other areas, however, geographic and geological conditions resulted in the persistence of biannual triple cropping. Later, the demand for cotton textiles led more and more peasant households in the former area to concentrate on cotton handicrafts, to the extent of cutting down their cultivated acreage. Accordingly, it became increasingly difficult for them to give up cotton handicrafts even during recessions. That was the reason why American strains of cotton, which could not be used for handicraft production, were cultivated not in the former area, but in the latter ones, after irrigation. In other words, each peasant household decided its course based on its own existing reproduction structure. This is why the process of commercialization in rural modern north China exhibited regional differences.
