     View Summary

Efficient pulse compression using stimulated Brillouin scattering in a fiber is proposed where the pump pulse transmitted through the fiber is immediately loopbacked to the fiber with its frequency downshifted by the amount equal to the Brillouin frequency shift of the fiber. The effect of the steepness of the front edge of the pump pulse on the compression performance and the influence of the spontaneous Brillouin scattering on the stability of the compressed pulses are numerically studied. A preliminary experiment of the proposed scheme is also reported.

  • Simple DQPSK signal regenerator using electrical limiting amplifiers

Masayuki Matsumoto (Part: Lead author, Corresponding author )

    IEEE Photonics Journal ( IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC )  7 ( 6 ) 7802313   2015.12  [Refereed]

     View Summary

A simple optoelectronic regenerator for differential quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals is demonstrated. The regenerator consists of two parallel delay interferometers followed by balanced detectors, limiting and driving amplifiers, and a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator that regenerates noise-suppressed optical QPSK signals. We experimentally show that the regenerator improves the receiver sensitivity by about 8 dB at an input optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of 19 dB at a signal speed of 10 Gbaud. Numerical simulation is conducted for higher speed operation at 56 Gbaud to study the impact of the bandwidth of electrical circuits inside the regenerator on the regenerator performance. Electrical power consumption of the regenerator is assessed, and it is shown that the optoelectronic regenerator consumes a similar amount of electrical power as that consumed by an all-optical version of the regenerator using semiconductor optical amplifiers as a nonlinear element.

    IEICE Electronics Express ( IEICE )  12 ( 24 ) 20150913   2015.12  [Refereed]

     View Summary

We propose a novel and simple carrier recovery method from carrier-less phase modulated optical signals. In this method, homodyne detection of the received signal, modulation stripping by an electro-optic phase modulator, and injection locking of a laser diode for carrier generation are performed in a feedback loop. Carrier extraction and error-free homodyne detection of a 10-Gb/s RZ-BPSK signal is demonstrated. The method can also be extended to carrier extraction from QPSK signals.

    M. Matsumoto (Part: Lead author, Corresponding author )

    Electronics Letters ( INST ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY-IET )  49 ( 3 ) 201 - 202   2013.01  [Refereed]

     View Summary

The high-speed amplitude limiting performance of a saturated fibre-optic parametric amplifier is numerically studied. It is shown that walk-off between the pump and signal pulses caused by a large dispersion slope makes the saturation behaviour less efficient and induces interaction between neighbouring signal pulses mediated by temporally-broadened pump depletion, both of which degrade the limiter performance.

    Optics Express ( Optical Society of American (OSA) )  19 ( 22 ) 21246 - 21257   2011.10  [Refereed]

     View Summary

An adaptive delay control to maintain time-interleaving condition of multi-channel input signals of all-optical amplitude limiter based on saturation of four-wave mixing (FWM) in a nonlinear fiber is demonstrated. The delay control utilizes as a monitor signal the optical power after the nonlinear fiber at a wavelength that is affected by interchannel FWM in the fiber. When the scheme is applied to 2 × 10 Gbit/s return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying signals where the time separation between the input channels is intentionally changed randomly, the delay control works well and error free detection after transmission is obtained. © 2011 Optical Society of America.

  • Analysis and experiment of all-optical time-interleaved multi-channel regeneration based on higher-order four-wave mixing in a fiber

Nor Shahida Mohd Shah, Masayuki Matsumoto (Part: Corresponding author )

    Optics Communications   284 ( 19 ) 4687 - 4694   2011.09  [Refereed]

     View Summary

Simultaneous all-optical multi-channel regeneration based on second-order four-wave mixing (FWM) in a single highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) is studied. Interchannel crosstalk, especially cross gain saturation and generation of interchannel FWM, is avoided by properly time-interleaved channels. Preliminary experiment of 2 ch × 10 Gbit/s operation shows simultaneous noise reduction of the two channels and good agreement with numerical analysis. Numerical investigation on 2 ch × 40 Gbit/s operation using the same parameters as the experiment shows that the regeneration can improve qualities of both channels. For more number of channels and higher speed of operation, several parameters need to be adjusted to avoid interchannel crosstalks. Time synchronization techniques for the input channels are also discussed. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

    The Review of Laser Engineering ( 一般社団法人 レーザー学会 )  33 ( 2 ) 95 - 99   2005.02  [Refereed]

     View Summary

In optical fiber transmission systems, polarization mode dispersion (PMD), represents a severe source of degradation as the bit rate increases. In this paper, we review PMD compensation techniques performed in optical domain. We also report our experimental results on PMD compensation by distributing linear polarizers along the transmission line. Polarizers are used as PMD compensator elements with only 1 degree-of-freedom (DOF) which result in simple configuration and fast response. Even though the polarizers do not compensate 1 st-order PMD perfectly, Distributed 4 polarizers outperformed a 2-DOF polarizer-based PMD compensator placed at the optical receiver front-end.

    IEEE Photonics Technology Letters ( IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC )  15 ( 6 ) 822 - 824   2003.06  [Refereed]

     View Summary

We numerically evaluate the performance of two kinds of distributed polarization-mode dispersion compensation techniques using either linear or elliptic variable polarizers. Each in-line compensator is characterized by only one or two degrees of freedom and the average power is used as a monitor signal, which simplifies the control algorithm. The use of polarizers causes inevitable attenuation of the optical signal, which induces additional noise in amplified systems. Nevertheless, the noise enhancement due to the distributed polarizer-induced loss is shown to be limited in systems operated with erbium-doped fiber amplifiers in gain saturation and the tolerable differential group delay can be improved if the frequency of insertions is increased.

The timing and energy jitter of an actively modelocked dispersion-managed fibre ring laser is studied theoretically and numerically. It is shown that the jitter is significantly dependent on the location of the filter and modulator in the cavity. It is also shown that the most stable operation will be obtained when the locations of the filter and modulator in the cavity are separately optimised.

Solitons in dispersion-managed (DM) fibers are promising candidates for a modulation format to be used in long-distance high-speed optical fiber data transmission. In this paper we perform a bit-error-rate analysis of a wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) DM soliton system operated at 40 Gbit/s per channel. We consider the intra-channel pulse-to-pulse interaction, the noise-induced timing jitter, the collision-induced time shifts, and the signal-ASE (amplified spontaneous emission) and ASE-ASE beat noise as the factors limiting the system performance. Effects of filters in reducing the collision-induced timing jitter in WDM transmission are also examined. It is shown that the minimum channel spacing required for long-distance transmission can be reduced by the use of in-line filters especially when the noise amplification due to the filter excess gain is suppressed.

In-line synchronous amplitude and/or phase modulation on solitons suppresses timing jitter of the pulse and eliminate noise accumulation, enabling long-distance and high-speed optical transmission without regeneration involving optc-electronic conversion [1,2]. It is known that such time-domain control of solitons in fibers with constant dispersion requires simultaneous use of narrowband filters to stabilize the pulse energy [3]. Recently it has been shown that the use of filters may be avoided in the time-domain control of solitons in dispersion-managed (DM) fibers [4]. In this paper, we quantify the stability of the DM solitons controlled by synchronous amplitude modulators and show that the frequency chirp of the pulse at the modulator critically affects the stability of the pulse.

Results of a rigorous leaky wave analysis of an optical grating coupler having a large grating period are presented. The coupler is designed so that most of the guided-wave power is transferred to a substrate beam progressing in the forward direction with the first-order air beam made evanescent. It is found that a large power partition into the substrate beam can readily be obtained in spite of the presence of a number of higherorder propagating space harmonics. Validity of the approximate perturbation method for the case of the long grating period is also examined. © 1989 Optical Society of America.

In this paper, we propose a novel carrier recovery method from carrier-less phase modulated optical signals. In this method, homodyne detection of the received signal, modulation stripping by an electro-optic phase modulator, and injection locking of a laser diode for carrier (local-oscillator light) generation are performed in a feedback loop. Carrier extraction and error-free homodyne detection of a lOGb/s RZ-BPSK signal is demonstrated. The method is also extended to carrier extraction from a lOGbaud RZ-QPSK signal.

In fiber transmission systems, to place signal regenerators within the system is effective for reducing noise and signal distortion and extending the transmission distance. In this paper, we propose an opto-electronic coherent signal regenerator for binary phase-shift keying (PSK) signals and show its effectiveness by an experiment. The features of the regenerator are: (1) It generates output signals by the use of an electro-optic Mach-Zehnder modulator after the input signals are converted to electric signals by a photo detector. Because it reduces noise on the signal by nonlinear nature of the modulator, realization of compact regenerators is expected. (2) The input PSK signals are demodulated to OOK signals by coherent detection, with which high-sensitivity signal regeneration and extension to regeneration of multi-level signals are expected. can be hoped high sensitive signal regeneration and expansion to Multi- level signals. It is noted that techniques of generating phase-locked local light waves should be established for realization of this regeneration scheme.

Information-rate analysis of single-channel NRZ-OOK transmission in a system including signal regenerators is performed. Obtained results are: (1) When the signals launched to the regenerators have no inter-symbol interference, larger information rates can be obtained because of the noise suppression by the regenerators; (2) When the signals launched to the regenerators have inter-symbol interference among neighboring symbols due to uncompensated dispersion, signal distortion is induced by the nonlinear nature of the regenerator. This distortion, however, is pattern-dependent so that information rate considering channel memory can be kept relatively high; and (3) Bit errors caused by the pattern-dependent signal distortion induced by the regenerator can be partially suppressed by post-detection processing such as maximum likelihood sequence estimation.

In this report, we theoretically evaluate information rates (IRs) for RZ-QPSK-signal transmission in a system where phase-preserving all-optical amplitude limiters are periodically inserted. Large IRs are achieved owing to the reduction of the nonlinear phase noise by the limiter when signal pulses are temporally isolated at the limiter. When the pulses are launched to the limiter after being broadened by the dispersion, which causes inter-symbol interference (ISI), the nonlinearity in the limiter induces pulse distortion. The IR can be kept large, however, when the effect of ISI is not large. This indicates that the nonlinear ISI induced in the limiter can be restored to some extent by suitable signal processing such as maximum likelihood sequence estimation at the receiver.

An experiment of all-optical regeneration of short-pulse differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) signals using fiber nonlinearity is reported. Bit error rate (BER) performance is measured for a two-span transmission system where the regenerator is inserted between the spans. Two cases are examined where the signal degradation before the regenerator is due mainly to nonlinearity of the transmission fiber, i.e., the nonlinear phase noise, and is due to addition of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE). The regenerator is shown to be more effective in recovering signal quality in the former case of degradation due to phase noise. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

The two-stage configuration allows wavelength shift-free operation of the regenerator. Recirculating-loop signal transmission and regeneration experiment shows that the bidirectional 2R regenerator extends transmission distance by a factor more than two for an unequally-spaced 40 Gb/s short-pulse train with minimum pulse separation of 12.5 ps. Numerical simulation for assessing the influence of Rayleigh backscattering in the bidirectional configuration is performed, which shows that although some influence of Rayleigh backscattering can appear at higher operation speeds such as 80 Gb/s, strong noise reduction is still achievable by the bidirectional two-stage regeneration.

Our recent experimental work on high-speed on-off keying signal regeneration using a two-stage SPM-based regenerator in bidirectional fiber configuration and on its application to differential phase-shift-keying signal regeneration is described in detail. © EDP Sciences and Springer 2009.

Generation of phase noise in an amplitude limiter using saturation of a fiber-optic parametric amplifier is analyzed. The analysis is based on the coupled differential equations for the amplitudes and phases of pump, signal, and idler involved in the four-wave mixing interaction. The equations are linearized about small fluctuations at operation points and are solved, which results in relations between the input and output phase and amplitude noise. These relations are used in deriving expressions of amplitude signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and variance of phase noise of the output signal in terms of SNRs of input signal and pump. It is shown that optimum pump power exists for minimum output phase noise in the output signal. (c) 2008 Optical Society of America.

The limiter suppresses amplitude fluctuations of the signal, by which the nonlinear phase variance caused by self-phase modulation in the transmission fiber is reduced. The 10-GSymbol/s short-pulse DQPSK transmission experiment over densely dispersion-managed fiber shows that the amplitude limitation after an imperfect transmitter increases maximum transmitted signal power by 5 dB.

Simultaneous reshaping of optically time-division-multiplexed RZ-OOK and RZ-DPSK signals by a fiber-based regenerator is numerically demonstrated. The regenerator utilizes the four-wave mixing (FWM) in a highly nonlinear fiber. A parametric amplifier configuration without wavelength conversion of the signal is assumed, in which ultra-fast saturation of the FWM interaction gives stabilization of signal amplitude with the signal phase principally maintained. The regenerator greatly improves the performance of OOK tributaries. Although the regenerator does not have the function of phase regeneration, it improves the DPSK signal quality when the signal power is relatively low where the amplitude noise is significant. Influence of the pump phase modulation on the regenerator performance is also examined. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.

     View Summary

Improvement of transmission performance of phaseshift-keying signals by the use of ultrafast optical limiters (amplitude regenerators) based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in fibers is theoretically and numerically studied. Theoretical analysis focuses on the nonlinear phase noise (the Gordon-Mollenauer effect) and its reduction by the limiters. It is shown that the cubic growth of the phase variance as the distance extends can be suppressed by the limiters that are periodically inserted in the system, although some additional phase noise is introduced by them. Numerical simulation is performed for nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) differential phase-shift-keying (DPSK) transmission in a quasi-linear highly dispersed-pulse system with and without limiters. The results show that the maximum transmission distance is extended by the limiters. A clear indication of nonlinear phase-noise reduction at the high-signal-power regime, however, is not seen. This is, attributed to the existence of intrachannel-FWM-induced phase fluctuation, which cannot be effectively suppressed by the amplitude limiter.

Reshaping of return-to-zero differential-phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) signals by fiber-based all-optical 211 regenerators is numerically studied. Diffusion of the phase of the signal in the process of amplitude stabilization is assessed for two types of regenerators: one based on soliton compression followed by narrow-band filtering, and another based on ultrafast saturation of four-wave mixing (FWM) in parametric amplifier configuration. It is shown that the FWM-based regenerators induce small phase diffusion and they can improve RZ-DPSK transmission performance.

Performance of fiber-based optical signal regenerators consisting of a synchronous amplitude modulator, a highly nonlinear fiber, and an optical bandpass filter is analyzed. The regenerators are operated in two different schemes: one utilizes solitonlike pulse compression in anomalous-dispersion fiber and subsequent filtering, and the other utilizes spectrum broadening in normal-dispersion fiber and subsequent spectrum slicing. Regeneration performance is compared for the two schemes in terms of the shape of energy transfer function and abilities of noise and timing-jitter reduction., Although both types of regenerators show good regenerator performance, the one based on spectrum broadening and slicing has better ability to stabilize signal amplitude while requiring larger signal power launched into the nonlinear fiber. The effectiveness of the regenerators in single-channel quasi-linear highly dispersed pulse transmission and dispersion-managed soliton transmission is also numerically examined.

This paper investigates the benefits of using compensators with either linear or elliptic variable polarizers in order to mitigate the effects of polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) in high-speed optical fiber transmission systems. Such compensators are characterized by only one or two degrees of freedom and the optical average power of the compensated signal is used as a monitor signal, which simplifies the control algorithm. We maximize the tolerable differential group delay for the compensated system with two different approaches. In the first, we optimize the position of the compensator along the transmission line. In the second, we distribute a number of compensators through the transmission line. The attenuation of the optical signal, caused by the use of polarizers in the PMD compensators, induces additional noise in amplified systems. We assess the impact of this impairment and show that the noise enhancement is limited in systems with erbium-doped fiber amplifiers operating in gain saturation.

Effectiveness of bitwise adjustment of decision timing at receiver in suppressing collision-induced timing jitter in dispersion-managed WDM RZ-pulse transmission is numerically analyzed. Because the collision-induced time shift in WDM RZ-pulse transmission is not random but determined by the bit pattern of neighboring wavelength chanenels, the time shift can be predicted. Therefore, time shift is nulled in principle by using receivers capable of bitwise adjustment of decision timing. We simulate the effectiveness of this method applied to filtered dispersion-managed soliton transmission.

Signal transmission through cascaded nonlinear optical loop mirrors (NOLM's) is theoretically studied. First, we studied waveform deformation as a function of the operation point of the NOLM and the walk-off time between signal wave and control pulse when an isolated pulse is transmitted. It was found that the pulse shape can be kept when the condition is optimally chosen. Second, we examin the capability of noise suppression and influence of dispersion between NOLM's when random pulse trains at 40 or 80Gb/s are transmitted. These analysises reveal the cascadability of the wavelength converters, which is an important element in all-optical networks.

We further show that the magnitude of timing and energy jitter is significantly dependent on the location of the filter, amplifier, and modulator in the cavity. We present a linear stability analysis of dispersion-managed (DM) solitons controlled by inline narrow-band filters. We show that the filters can destabilize the pulse if they are unsuitedly located in the dispersion map, which is contrary to the case of standard solitons in fibers with constant dispersion. We also show that for such an instability to take place the pulse energy and the dispersion-map strength should be significantly larger than those usually required for practical long-distance transmission, The filter-induced instability of DM solitons will be an issue in the operation of stretched-pulse mode-locked fiber lasers.

We show by a linear stability analysis that appropriate positioning of synchronous amplitude modulators in the dispersion map can stabilize the propagation of DM solitons without simultaneous use of bandpass filters when the pulse energy is sufficiently large. It is also shown that the frequency chirp of the pulse at the position of the modulator critically affects the stability.

Unstable behavior of dispersion-managed (DM) solitons in a system with lumped filtering is numerically studied. A variational analysis shows that the system cannot have stable fixed DM soliton solutions when the filter location is improperly chosen. This is because of the unique dynamics of the spectral behavior of DM solitons, which differs from that of standard solitons in fibers with constant dispersion. The instability is confirmed by numerical simulations with and without sliding center frequencies of the filters. (C) 1998 Optical Society of America.

Approximate analytical expressions for quasi-steady-state pulse parameters of stretched pulses in dispersion-managed fibers are derived. The analysis uses the same approach as that developed for the analysis of stretched-pulse fiber ring lasers but with improved calculation of nonlinearity-induced pulse chirping by means of an approximate variational method. The energy-enhancement factor of the stretched pulse is derived, showing reasonable agreement with numerical results. (C) 1997 Optical Society of America.

We compare numerically long-distance propagation of two types of nonlinear pulses: a stretched pulse in a fiber with alternating normal and anomalous dispersion and a soliton in a fiber with uniformly anomalous dispersion, Numerical evaluation of timing jitter and Q factor reveals that stretched pulses can be propagated over longer distances than solitons with the same (averaged) fiber dispersion in the presence of weak fixed-frequency filtering. We also examine pulse-to-pulse interactions between stretched pulses and the influence of fluctuations of the fiber dispersion.

Propagation of solitons in fibers with randomly varying birefringence is studied with and without including the effect of soliton transmission control. A simple expression for the decay of soliton energy due to the birefringence is derived, which will be useful in predicting soliton-pulse broadening in randomly birefringent fibers with their polarization-mode dispersion parameter specified. It is also shown that transmission control of solitons effectively removes dispersive radiations generated by the birefringence.

Shorter pulses and more packed pulse train are required to introduce optical solitons into the domestic high-bit-rate telecommunication trunk line. A distributed adiabatic amplification system to suppress the pulse broadening in which the sliding frequency filters are periodically installed to suppress the nonlinear interactions between solitons is a promising transmission system. Such a system is studied through the numerical simulation and the perturbation method. In the system, the spacing between pump stations and/or filters are limited by the net gain variation along the fiber, which yields the dispersive waves and they affect the interaction between solitons.

We have numerically studied propagation properties of picosecond solitons in fibers exhibiting polarization-mode dispersion using a fiber model where both magnitude and orientation of the linear birefringence are assumed to vary randomly. Solitons are shown to decay in propagating down the fiber since dispersive waves are continuously emitted from the soliton by the effect of birefringence. We show that the soliton transmission control such as that using the sliding-frequency filters is quite effective in stabilizing the soliton propagation in randomly birefringent fibers since those control schemes not only stabilize the soliton itself but also eliminate dispersive waves causing the instabilities.

Both static and dynamical analyses of quasi-phase-matched second-harmonic generation by backward propagating interaction, where the second-harmonic wave is generated in reflection, are presented. It is shown that bistability appears in the generated second-harmonic power if the amount of phase mismatch is suitably chosen. The bistability also appears in the output fundamental wave, since the cascaded second-order nonlinear process gives rise to the effective self-modulation of the fundamental wave, which can be applied to all-optical signal professing. The output second-harmonic and fundamental powers can be switched between two bistable states by controlling the intensity or phase of the input fundamental wave.

A linear stability analysis is made on a stationary pulse solution which exists under the effects of narrow-band filters, linear and nonlinear gains to clarify the nature of instability. Then the evolution equation is solved numerically assuming various input waveforms with different phase profiles. It is shown that stable propagation over long distances can be obtained by using suitable combination of linear and nonlinear gains even under the use of strong narrow-band filters.

In soliton transmission systems with bandwidth-limited amplifications, solitons tend to be destroyed during long-distance propagation owing to the interaction with linear dispersive waves, which are generated from solitons by the filtering and amplified by the excess gain around the filter center frequency. Recently Kodama et al. [Electron. Lett. 28, 1981 (1992)] suggested that the instability may be suppressed by introducing amplifiers with nonlinear gain, or gain and saturable absorption in combination. We demonstrate numerically the validity of using nonlinear gain to stabilize soliton transmissions where the filters are incorporated to reduce the Gordon-Haus frequency shift.

It is shown that for saw-tooth gratings the blazing effect is almost lost around the second-order Bragg wavelength because the reflected guide mode generated in the distributed Bragg reflector radiates preferentially into the sub-strate. by using a parallelogram grating with equal tooth and groove lengths, however, a high efficiency of radiation into the air is attainable even at the Bragg wavelength while the reflectivity is reduced. © 1992 IEEE.

A theoretical analysis is presented for the radiation characteristics of millimeter waves in a periodic dielectric waveguide having a light-induced grating layer. The waveguide is assumed to be composed of an insulator (sapphire) slab whose one surface is coated with a high-resistivity semiconductor (silicon) film. A boundary-integral-equation formulation is employed to obtain characteristic solutions of the waveguide. Numerical calculations are made at 94 GHz for both TM and TE polarizations. Estimations of the illumination power required to produce the grating are given. The waveguide presented in this paper, in conjunction with a high-power semiconductor diode laser array as a light source, may be developed to operate as an electronically beam-steerable leaky-wave antenna at millimeter-wave frequencies.
