     View Summary

In this chapter, research articles and books on tourism and Japan published in both Japanese and English are reviewed based on online databases. In Japanese, 2, 463 books and 727 government publications (1940-2016), and 471 articles published in two journals (1961-2015) are identified, and in English, 21 books and 7 book chapters (1983-2013), and 224 articles in 97 journal titles (1975-2016) are examined. The review had two aims: to identify main research trends in Japan and globally, and to examine how the overall theme of this special issue - regions, communities and places in Japan - are portrayed (or not) in the existing studies within the materials located with the keyword tourism or kankō (in Japanese). General trends and specific aspects are identified and explored independently as well as comparatively between Japanese and English language publications, providing an overview of, and potential future directions in, this field of study.

    Yumiko Horita

    Tourism Planning and Development ( Routledge )  15 ( 1 ) 26 - 39   2018.01  [Refereed]

     View Summary

Since around 2000, tourism has gradually become a key activity reinforcing the Japanese economy. In particular, there has been growth in urban tourism and many urban spaces have been transformed to meet visitors’ needs, a process that has occurred not only in the large metropolises but also in small- and medium-sized regional cities. This paper explores how urban tourism spaces in Japan have been created alongside more general urban development, examining significant aspects and implications of the urban tourism development process. It reveals that the growth of urban tourism has accelerated the growth of local residents’ awareness and activities. Local residents have become more conscious about their living areas and have undertaken spontaneous activities to manage the areas whereas previously there had been a constant struggle and negotiation with the contradiction between urban developments and economic depression. It concludes that citizen participation in the urban tourism development process can be extended into a collaborative area management.

     View Summary

This study surveys living conditions and residents' intention to the settlement in coastal areas of Kushimoto, Wakayama Prefecture through interview and questionnaires to the residents. We analyze the data to figure out maintenance of social relations and intention of relocation to higher areas. 1) There is a major gap in the degree of intention to relocation, and so we divide them into 3 groups as the degree; reject, passive and positive. 2) The reject group consists of elderly and unwaged people, and they have day to day mutual assistance with the nearest neighbors alone. 3) Younger people seem to accept relocation, and therefore measures for driving relocation forward can be split into young and elderly people.

     View Summary

This study aims to clarify the change of human relation in the nighbourhood by the space restructuring system thorough the earthquake disaster rehabilitation land readjustment project. We made a questionnaire survey on the residents at the Misuga district, Kobe City where the project was enforced. Clarified points are as follows: 1) Changes made by spatial restructuring through urban area reconstruction project have several levels, some households being affected significantly while others aren't. 2) Significantly influenced households are more likely to lose the relationships they had with their neighbors before the earthquake. 3) They lose relationships with their neighbors because of the changes in housing types and the distance between domiciles. By losing the relationships with neighbors, residents go out less frequently, and they tend to "shut-in". 4) They are mainly small households. Many of them used to have relationships with neighbors who have different types of households.

This study aims to evaluate the earthquake disaster rehabilitation land readjustment project through the conscious of the residents. We made a questionnaire survey on the residents at the Misuga district, Kobe City where the project was enforced. Clarified points are as follows: 1) Residents' evaluation corresponds to level that people put their lives back in order. 2) There are three significant factors which impede putting residents' lives back in order; infrastructure redevelopment, uniformity of land use and collapse of neighbourly ties. 3)Collapse of neighborly ties gave negative impacts on majority of the residents in the area, on the other hand redevelopment of infrastructure and uniformity of land use gave greater impacts on the residents who less putted their lives back. 4) Redevelopment of infrastructure has formed the space that social contacts hardly occurred and then obstructed to rebuild neighbourly ties. 5) The process of uniformity of land use has broken up mutual assistance which used to exist among independent enterprisers and between residents and independent enterprisers in the area.

     View Summary

This study will track the change of the characteristics of residential space of residents moved in the Disaster Restoration Public Housing and clarify how the change has affected the social "isolation" of residents. We made a questionnaire survey on the residents in the Public Housing in Kobe City. Clarified points are as follows: 1. Isolation process corresponds to the situation which people lost familiar environments such as their old home, interaction with neighborhood and fun in their life. 2 It is remarkable that many people who reluctantly moved into the disaster restoration public housing have been isolated. Most of them have been still attached to the town and home which they used to live. 3. Single elderly households who live in the higher floor level of large scale housing estate tend to be isolated. 4. It is found the tendency of polarization between residents who isolated and who not isolated in the disaster restoration public housing located in suburban and waterfront areas. 5. In the case that residents have lived far away from the place people lived before the earthquake, isolated residents cannot regenerate social relations and its situation has been fixed.

  • STUDY ON THE CHANGE OF CHARACTERISTICS OF HOUSES/URBAN DISTRICTS AND THE “ISOLATION” OF RESIDENTS IN THE DEVASTED URBAN AREA: Based on the reconstruction project at the Tsukiji district, Amagasaki city

    塩崎賢明, 田中正人, 堀田祐三子

    日本建築学会計画系論文集 ( Architectural Institute of Japan )  71 ( 605 ) 119 - 126   2006.07

     View Summary

This study will track the reconstruction process of the urban area devastated by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and clarify how the change of characteristics of houses/urban districts has affected the "isolation" of residents. We made a questionnaire survey on the residents in the public housing at the Tsukiji district, Amagasaki City where the Residential District Improvement Project was enforced. Clarified points are as follows: 1. Family units that moved in to the public housing from a detached/row house showed a larger percentage of "isolation" than the ones from an apartment house. 2. The degree of "isolation" differed according to what floor the residents lived. Family units living in the 1st-2nd floor showed a smaller percentage of "isolation", but the ones living in the 3rd floor upper showed an extraordinary larger percentage of "isolation". 3. What can control "isolation" is to have a chance of a natural exchange with the vicinity residents. An intentional plot to urge an exchange will not function well for the already "isolated" residents. A space design, which secures an exchange with residents on a day-to-day visual/traffic line base, is required.

    日本建築学会計画系論文集 ( Architectural Institute of Japan )  71 ( 603 ) 81 - 87   2006.05

     View Summary

It has been 10 years since the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. During this decade, temporary houses privately built have taken a significant role for the recovery process from the earthquake damages. This study firstly shows how many private temporary houses (PTHs) have still existed and disappeared, secondly analyses the characteristics of long life PTHs, and thirdly explores how to utilize the empty plots after PTHs disappeared. As the result of survey, 844 PTHs have been existed and 810 disappeared between 2000 and 2004, It is found that a considerable number of PTHs has continuously existed today in the areas where urban redevelopment and land readjustment programmes have not covered. At the same time, many PTHs had disappeared with the progress of land readjustment programme but empty plot after PTHs disappeared have not always replaced permanent houses.

  • THE PROJECT STATUS, INHABITANTS ATTRIBUTION AND THEIR OPINION IN POST EARTHQUAKE URBAN REDEVELOPMENT AREA―The case study in Shin‐Nagata station south area―

    塩崎賢明, 堀田祐三子, 石川路子

    日本建築学会計画系論文集 ( Architectural Institute of Japan )  71 ( 599 ) 87 - 93   2006.01

     View Summary

This study aims to research residents' profile in Shin-Nagata station south area where urban redevelopment programme has been carrying out, and to elucidate residents' evaluation of current redevelopment programme and local community. Some residents have lived before the earthquake and others are new comers who have started to live since new condominium had been built. 76% of all residents lived in the condominium are new residents and 80% of all tenants lived in rented housing are old residents who have lived before the earthquake. Most of them satisfied with housing and intend to live there permanently. At the same time, they feel anxiety of evacuation when earthquake happened because they live in high-rise buildings. In addition, they feel dissatisfaction to strong winds blowing through the tall buildings, less greenery and many empty commercial spaces. In Shin-Nagata station south area, currently 19 buildings have been completed and 4 buildings are under construction. Another 17 buildings are planned to build from now on but 26% of commercial floor spaces in existing buildings have already been unused. The redevelopment programme should reflect the residents' evaluations clarified in this study in the future.

    日本建築学会計画系論文集 ( Architectural Institute of Japan )  70 ( 587 ) 121 - 128   2005.01

     View Summary

This study aims to find out the distribution of private temporary houses (PTHs) and its transformation since Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake occurred, to explore possibility for establishing PTH as one of housing reconstruction programme by analyzing its characteristics and building process. We found that the number of PTHs in 2000 has decreased approximately 60 percent since 1997. There are 70 percent of PTHs retained in the areas where not covered the urban redevelopment programme and land readjustment programme. 34.9% of disappeared PTHs have just demolished and its lot of the land has been vacant. 34.6% of them have transformed to newly built permanent houses. Since 1997, 3859 PTHs have been built, which is 9% of all collapsed and burnt houses in Kobe. This is not a small number in the framework of the housing reconstruction. We points out reconstruction programme should have included support for PTHs and rebuilding houses united some neighbourhood lots.

This study aims to understand housing situation of Single Mother Households who are divorced or widowed in Japan. Recently, the greater rate of divorce or separation caused by changes in lifestyles and social status for women have been contributing to the growing number of Single Mother Households. However, these families are facing difficulties in seeking to be economically and socially independent As their income is just a fraction of the general households, under the profit-oriented housing provision, it is hard for many of them to own or rent housing because housing expenses for housing are still much of a burden for single mother households to bear.
