  • Local perspectives on preferable tourism futures: insights from Finland and Japan

    Aarni Tuomi, Husna Zainal-Abidin

Journal of Tourism Futures ( Emerald Insight )    2025.11  [Refereed]

     View Summary

    Purpose
Sustainable tourism development has been a key strategy for future destination development, yet much of the research predominantly focuses on tourists' needs, often overlooking host community perspectives. Following the “local turn,” this study aims to address this gap by investigating preferable tourism futures in lesser-known and rural destinations from the host's viewpoint.

    Design/methodology/approach
Using a qualitative approach, a series of Lego Serious Play workshops was conducted in August 2024 in Finland and in May 2024 in Japan with local participants (n = 36) to envision their preferable tourism futures in 2034.

    Findings
This study highlights the importance of balancing preservation and innovation to achieve sustainable tourism development from the bottom-up. In particular, findings demonstrate the value of engaging local communities in shaping tourism strategies, revealing nuanced preferences across cultures. Finnish participants emphasized gradual improvements, community well-being and accessibility, reflecting European sustainability values. Conversely, Japanese participants prioritized heritage preservation and resilience, shaped by environmental and sociocultural challenges unique to the region.

    Originality/value
These comparative insights illustrate that community-driven approaches to tourism development can foster sustainable and equitable insights on preferable tourism futures. This study offers practical implications for policymakers and practitioners, emphasizing the need to integrate local perspectives into tourism planning to achieve buy-in through balanced and future-ready outcomes, particularly to enhance the resilience of lesser-known destinations amidst global uncertainties.

     View Summary

Video games offer tourism stakeholders new opportunities for diversification. Focusing on Assassin’s Creed Shadows, a video game set in feudal Japan, we explore the feasibility of leveraging the game as part of Wakayama Prefecture’s tourism offering, a specific region prominently featured in the game. Implications for how Finnish tourism industry might leverage video game tourism in a similar manner are drawn. A two-part multimethod exploratory study is conducted: 1) a study of popular online discussion forum r/AssassinsCreedShadows (forum threads n=150 & comments n=421), drawing inspiration from the broader research tradition of netnography, and 2) a qualitative survey (n=38) with local tourism stakeholders in and prospective international visitors to Wakayama Prefecture. Findings show how players organically discuss tourism-related topics, e.g. building real-life itineraries based on Kansai-area locations seen in-game or sharing tips for what to pack for a visit to Japan. This provides support for the potential positive effect Assassin’s Creed Shadows might have for inbound international tourism in Japan. The qualitative survey further shows a generally positive attitude towards theming different tourism offerings, e.g. restaurant experiences, photospots, or game-inspired activities such as ‘leap of faiths’, around the game. However, caution is needed so that new initiatives do not disrupt local heritage or residents’ day-to-day life. This paper brings nuance to the concept of authenticity of tourism experience by introducing prospect-based authenticity – a desire to validate imagined experiences before they even happen – to design and develop tourism offerings.

     View Summary

The article highlights the importance of older adults as key contributors to climate change mitigation solutions. In conjunction with younger generations, their involvement is crucial for fostering sustainable tourism futures. The paper outlines a research project focused on understanding the perspectives of local residents in Finland and Japan regarding sustainable tourism in 2034. Employing a multimethod approach, including qualitative surveys, co-creation workshops, and AI-generated virtual galleries, the project seeks to inform tourism policy and business practices. The findings are expected to offer insights for community-led tourism development and the role of emerging technologies in visualizing preferable futures.

Abstract
Older adults have been recognized as a key tourist segment for cultural tourism. Despite the growing population of older adults, limited research have explored their experiences and needs within digital cultural experiences. Therefore, this research note takes on an exploratory approach in understanding older adults’ perceptions towards digital cultural experiences in the context of two ‘super-aged’ nations: Finland and Japan. The findings illustrate that differences do exist, and that Finnish older adults are found to be more open to technology-use in the context of digital cultural experiences than their Japanese counterparts. Implications for e-tourism research and management are discussed.
