Development and Application of Electronic Memory Notebook to Japan and China

In this article, we propose the support system to make a traveler's diary, "Electronic Memory Notebook". This system consists of a compact terminal with a touch panel screen and a web server for SNS site. Travelers make traveler's diaries by writing and drawing on a photograph which he/she took at a tourist spot. The traveler's diary is shared via SNS web site. Furthermore the other user can browse the traveler's diary and overdraw some comments or illustrations on it. We evaluate if "Electronic Memory Notebook" can accelerate drawing up of a traveler's diary in Japan and China. As a result, the making of the traveler's diary was promoted by additional overdrawing on a traveler's diary and reading via SNS site.

Relationships between Smiley and Atmosphere during Chat with Emotional Characters

In this research, we analyze the relationships among smiley, nonverbal expressions, and atmospheres during chat with emotional characters. People use smiley to convey the user's emotions. We focus on the smiley to deduce the user's mental state aiming to apply to chat system.

The Effect of Additional Information for the Music Recommendation System based on Location Information

Many kinds of music recommendation method, considering user' s preference or situation, have been proposed. We developed a music recommendation system based on location information and additional information. But we couldn' t confirm effectiveness of location information for music recommendation. Therefore, we have experimented to confirm the effectiveness of location information again. The results of experiments suggested that there was a possibility that users were influenced by synthetical situation besides location information.

Development of Virtual Band Support System

We have developed a virtual band support system We can play favorite music and play coordinately by the system. We can also play freely I ike a "virtual guitar". The input of the system consists of a ten-key pad and a gyro mouse. The reading music with the score of the number notation is one of the characteristic of the system. We performed a comparison experiment about the interface of guitar simulators and a session experiment through the network. The results of the experiments indicated that the system was super ior to other gui tar simuIators from the viewpoint of pieasure, operation and reading score. As a result of experiment of the session, a delay occurred, but we understood that we were more pleasant than a stand alone experiment.

Development and Application of Idea Generation Support System Using Table-top Interface

KJ method is one of the famous idea generation methods in Japan. Original KJ method is performed using paper tags (ex. Post It). KJ method is also implemented on computers. The system is called the computerized KJ method support system. In the original KJ method for several participants, it is hard to read the content from the other side. In the computerized KJ method for several participants with PCs, it is hard to point the content by a figure directly. We have developed a computerized KJ method support system, which used the direction dependent table-top interface named Lumisight-Table for solving the problem. We compared performance between the Lumisight-Table system and the conventional system. The results of the experiments indicated that working time reduced from 30.8min. to 18.0min. using the Lumisight-Table system and the significant difference was existed. The numbers of remarks increased by using the Lumisight-Table system.

In Japan and other countries, pictographs have widely spread to add nuance to mails in mobile phones. We have developed a pictograph chat system, which enables communication using nothing but pictographs. We have prepared 550 pictograph symbols. The system has a history tab, which can save and reuse all pictographs used in the previous chat lines. We applied the system for communication to 2 groups of foreign students and Japanese students. We have carried out experiments 4 times. We report the results of the experiments as below. (1) The average number of chat lines was 29 lines in 30 minutes. (2) The subjects understood 83% of the chat contents. (3) The history tab is used about 24% of all selected pictographs. (4) History tab was used frequently in relation to the number of chat lines.

Tourists or businessmen who visited Japan increased in late years. The opportunity of communication have been increased between Japanese and foreigners. We have developed a pictograph chat communicator, named the Pictograph Chat Communicator II. The system will apply communication between the people of the different language. The Pictograph Chat Communicator II has over 500 pictographs and has a log function for searching pictographs easily. In this report, we describe the functions and operations of the system and its future development.

The character behave as agents of users and automatically act on messages of the users and the other character's action. Application of The Pictograph Chat Communicator

We have developed a pictograph chat communicator, which was implemented on a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant). We have performed pictograph communication experiments using the communicator in England and U.S.A. Pictograph communication uses only pictograph for communication. The twenty nine subjects in twelve countries participated in the experiment. Experiments have been performed by the people whose native languages are different, and the people whose native language are the same. The experimental results showed that every subject can get simple communication each other under limited number of pictograph condition and the people whose native languages are different evaluated the experiments high. The numbers of pictograph or the usage of pictograph is not enough for communication.

Proposal on the Recommendation Service of Music Based on User's Actual Location

We propose a recommendation service of music based on a user's actual location. The user can relate music to the location information from a GPS. So, users can share the impact depending on the consistency between the scenery and the music. This system will promote the download of music in outdoors inevitably.

We have developed an input method that uses sense of touch to input face marks. Using this method, we can input face marks if we grip the mouse. The feature of this system is that we can input two or more kinds of face marks according to how to grip a mouse. We applied this input method to the contents assessment of broadcasting and evaluated the system. We found good evaluation of the face marks that present positive impressions, comparing to the former application.

In this article, we discuss the evaluation of an impression displayed by presentation contents which are constructed by a dialogue between embodied characters. There are many types of presentation style to provide information to users to get a better understanding. If the way which information is shown through an embodied characters' dialogue is adopted, the characters have the faces and bodies in order to be "embodied", so, the information provider must care about meanings of a state of nonverbal expressions of the embodied characters. People display and exchange nonverbal expressions including eye-gazes, noddings, and facial expressions in daily conversation. Nonverbal expressions convey various kinds of information that is essential to make our face-to-face communication successful. In the previous work on social psychology, it is known that there are interdependences among nonverbal expressions between those from different persons in conversation with each other. We apply this knowledge to a dialogue between embodied characters, which provide information to users, so that we evaluate if the presentation dialogue expresses the corresponding atmosphere to an expected atmosphere.

The pictograph chat was implemented on a personal digital assistant (PDA) for the chat communications only of the pictograph, and the application experiment including the foreigner was performed. The experiment that added the alphabet as pictograph was performed, too. It was suggested that this system be suitable for the conversation with the foreigner by whom the word was not understood or the intimate friend because of the result of the experiment. The pictograph is insufficient, and to make easily to use, the function of the display of the example of the pictograph and the necessity of the retrieval function have been understood though the experiment engages one's interest.
