Development of a distributed pictograph chat system: Pictograph chat communicator IV

We have developed a pictograph chat communicator for distant places, named Pictograph Chat Communicator IV. The system has an awareness function, an example sentence indication function, a pictograph quotation function, and a Web image search function. Experiments were carried out 9 times in Japanese and Chinese. As a result, the level of understanding is 88.2%. Though we experimented with the system in distant places, the results did not differ from those in the same room. It was supposed that pictograph communication was sufficient for ice-breaking communication between distant places. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

携帯電話やパソコンの普及により，ネットワークを介してコミュニケーションをとる機会が増大した．コミュニケーションをとるためのシステムも多岐にわたり，テキストだけでなく，絵文字，アバタ，アイコンなどといった様々な視覚的表現技法が利用されている．これらの技法はチャットシステム利用者の多くに使われており，意思疎通に役立っているが，現状ではユーザ自身の感情などを表現するために使われることがほとんどである．そこで本研究では，入力メッセージの内容により異なる姿に成長するアバタを設計し，感情表現のためだけでなくチャットシステムに視覚的な娯楽要素を取り入れることによって，チャットメッセージのやりとりの活発化を目指す．In this article, we analyze the effects of visual entertainment factors included in visual expressions on chat communication aiming to exchange chat messages lively. Visual expressions such as smiley, an avatar and a pictogram, are essential to make our communication successful. However, visual expressions can be used as only substitution to express user's intentions. Therefore we propose a chat system with characters which change different aspects according to chat messages with visual expressions and we investigate the effects on exchanging chat messages.

Examination about the Input Method Using Pressure Sensor Supplementary to Select from Some Candidates

モバイル端末で圧力センサを補助的に使用することにより，選択的な入力を効率的に行えるインタフェースを考案した．これを，絵文字を使ってコミュニケーションするためのツールである，絵文字チャットコミュニケータの絵文字入力に適用した．その結果，従来の GUI による選択のみで絵文字を入力するよりも，本入力インタフェースにより絵文字を選択する方が，操作時間が短縮でき，操作性が改善されることがわかった．We developed the efficient input method of mobile devices using pressure sensor supplementary to select from some candidates. We applied this input method to select pictograph in communication application using pictograph, named "Pictograph Chat Communicator". From the results of the experiments, we found that our input method could make the selection of pictograph more speedy and usable than traditional GUI input method.

Effect of an Intuitional Pictogram Comment Function and an Emotional Sharing Function for a Video Sharing Web System

Video sharing websites have spread throughout the world. There are logical comments and emotional comments for video sharing website. If an input process is complex and difficult, emotional comments will be difficult to submit. We have developed a video sharing system named as "Onion", which have a text comment function and a pictogram comment function. The system has an emotional comment input function for a pictogram comment function and an emotional sharing function for viewers. The emotional comment input function consists of a scroll wheel of a mouse and pictograms. We have experimented using the system. The results of experiment, we got 738 views, 1,806 pictograph comments and 108 text comments on experiment. The ratio of the text comment is the same as before and the ratio of the pictogram is large. We confirmed the utility of the system.

Comparison with of Pictograph Chat Communication between Japanese and Foreigner

小型 PC 上で絵文字のみでチャットを行う，絵文字チャットコミュニケータを開発し，異なる母国語を持つ人同士のコミュニケーションの支援に適用してきた．本システムは 550 個の絵文字と絵文字を探しやすくするための履歴機能等を持つ．これまで海外 4 ヶ所（米国（2 ヶ所），ベトナム，ポルトガル）で適用実験をおこなった．これらの実験から得られた日本人と外国人の実験結果を比較する．We had developed a pictograph chat communicator on PCs. The system used 550 pictographs to communicate each other. We added the history function to the system as a supporting function. The system had been applied to the communication between the people of the different language outside of Japan four times (U.S.A (two times), Vietnam and Portugal). We compare the results of experiments between Japanese and non-Japanese.

Pictograph Chat Communicator III: A Chat System That Embodies Cross-Cultural Communication

The Pictograph Chat Communicator III is a modified version of the conventional system, where pictograph selection and the taxonomy of pictographs were taken a closer look. We added new pictographs (subjects, verbs, adjectives, 5W1H, symbols, and alphabets) and deleted unnecessary pictographs. We also changed the taxonomy of pictographs. Experiments were carried out 9 times in international conference halls of America, Vietnam, and Portugal, between people who do not share the same spoken language (or native language). As a result, the level of understanding is 91.1%. We supposed that pictograph communication was enough in the ice-breaking communications.

Repetition of Dialogue Atmosphere Using Characters Based on Face-to-Face Dialogue

In this article; we at the relationships between nonverbal expressions and atmospheres during face-to-face dialogue by persons aiming to apply to an information character. Information characters provide information to viewers through their dialogue to get a better understanding. the way which information is shown through an embodied characters' dialogue is adopted; the characters have the faces and bodies in order to be "embodied", so, the information provider must care about meanings of a state of nonverbal expressions displayed by the embodied characters. People also display and exchange nonverbal expressions including eye-gazes; noddings, and facial expressions in daily conversation. Nonverbal expressions convey various kinds of information that is essential to make our face-to-face communication successful. In the previous work on social psychology, it is known that there are interdependences among nonverbal expressions between those from different persons in conversation with each other. We investigate dialogue scenes of TV shows to convey information; with a goal of applying above knowledges to a dialogue between embodied characters, which provide information to risers.

Development of an Idea Generation Consistent Support System GUNGEN-SPIRAL II based on Web

Web ベース発想一貫支援システム GUNGEN-SPIRAL II を開発した．本システムはアイデアの収集および共有，発想法に至るまで知の循環を支援するものである．適用実験の結果，メールによるアイデアの登録は使いやすく，発想法においては，共有画面と音声のみのコミュニケーションでも十分に作業が行えることがわかった．また，iPhone でも従属的な形で発想法に参加できることがわかった．We have developed the GUNGEN-SPIRAL II, which system supports the process of idea generation consistently. That is, the system supports the idea collection step, idea sharing step, and the idea generation step. The results of an experiment suggested that the input method by the mail was easy to use and the communication method by the shared screen and Skype were efficiently in the idea generation step. The iPhone was effective for the dependent participation of the idea generation.

Pictograph Communication using Table Top Interface

海外を旅行する日本人，また日本を旅行する外国人が増加し，外国人とコミュニケーションをとる機会が増えた．絵文字の解釈はほぼ世界共通である．そこで観光案内所での利用を想定し，簡単に写真を絵文字として追加でき，テーブルトップインタフェースを用いて操作が容易な対面型絵文字チャットシステムを開発した．実験の結果，写真を絵文字として使うとチャット内容の理解度が向上する傾向にあった．The Japanese who traveled in the foreign countries or the foreigners who traveled in Japan increased, and opportunities to regard communication as a foreigner increased. The interpretation of the pictograph is approximately common through the world. We have developed a meeting type pictograph chat system that we assume to use at the tourist information center. The system can easily add a photograph as a pictograph, and use a table- top interface for easy operation. The understanding degree of chat contents tended to improve when we used the photograph as a pictograph.

The Application of The Pictograph Chat Communicator II in a Foreign Country

We have developed a pictograph chat communicator, named the Pictograph Chat Communicator II. The system has been applied to the communication between the people of the different language. The Pictograph Chat Communicator II has over 500 pictographs and has a log function for searching pictographs easily. On the basis of a past application result, we changed the pictographs and it's grouping. We carried out experiments of chats outside of Japan (U.S.A). The experiments were carried out 6 times. We report the results of the experiments as below. 1) The average understanding level was 84%, which value is the same as the former system. 2) New pictographs (subject, adjective, 5W1H, the alphabet), which were added to the experiment, were used 44% of whole pictographs in chats. 3) The average of chat lines was 2.3, which value was as twice as the former system.
