Relationship between shape-archtecture of Miscanthus sacchariflorus community and bio-diversity of the thysanopteran insects on banks in Kyoto City was examined in the summer of 1998 to clarify functional potential of M. sacchariflorus community for habitat of the minute insects and to review direction in the conservation of them. The M. sacchariflorus communities selected for the present study were three types of vegetation showing different shape and scale. The quality of the thrips bio-diversity was estimated based on the species richness, the individuals richness, the pestiferous potential, the food habit, and the wing-form. As a result, for the conservation of the thrips bio-diversity and in the amenities of urban river bank, the more important point in the managenent of the M. sacchariflorus community seemed to be not to enhance the linear and horizontal succession but to keep the vertical extent (3-dimensional archtecture) and the shoot persistence.

Development of multispectral infrared camera system for plant healthiness evaluation

Environment preservations of the forest become world-widely close-up. The remote sensing technologies have been used for observation of the forest. However, the remote sensing by satellite is seriously hindered by atmospheric phenomena and cannot get the detailed data, which are necessary for precise analysis of the state of forest. So the observation system on the ground is needed. In this paper, we develop a multispectral infrared camera system to investigate the continuous spectra of mid-range infrared whose wavelengths cover around 3000nm to 5000nm. We define hue value in the case that the number of primary image is more than three. An algorithm to calculate the hue value from multispectral infrared images is proposed to obtain spectrum change of plants. An experiment of observation using the multispectral infrared camera system when the plant is growing week from cutting water off is shown.

Variation of the Living Density of Grasshoppers Across the City Areas(PAPERS OF THE 19th SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH MEETING)

In this paper, we researched and investigated the living densities of grasshoppers in the Osaka and Higashi Osaka city along the Kintetsu-Nara railroad line. Twelve experimental circles (r=250m) are settle on the area of each railroad stations. Grasshoppers in the experimental circles are caught by the sweeping method by two persons and they are discriminated and identify the species. The results are follows; 1) Living densities of grasshoppers along the research line increase as an exponential function and if we express this by the regression equation, y = e0.363x-1.699 (y: living density of grasshoppers, x: distance from the Tsuruhashi station). 2) It can be considered that there is no effect of the size and the compositions of the open space for the living densities of grasshoppers.

本研究では,地球温暖化が樹木のフェノロジーに及ぼす影響を明らかにするため,気象庁の観測によるソメイヨシノの開花日について近年の温暖化データを加えたうえで緯度別に再整理した.その結果,冬季の温度上昇がおこると,北方では開花が早くなるが,南方では開花が遅れることが再確認された.逆に厳冬の場合では南方で開花が早まることも明らかとなった.さらに,花芽形成から開花までの低温日の日数が多くなるほど開花日の日平均気温が低下する傾向を認め,地球温暖化が進行した場合,南方では休眠解除を促進する低温が不足し,開花が遅れる可能性を指摘した.

The Estimation for the Slope Plantings by using the Forest Surface Soils Packed in Sandbags(PAPERS OF THE 18th SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH MEETING)

The purposes of this study are to obtain a preliminary knowledge for the re-forestry of slope areas with endemic plants stored in a forest soils. The examination area was built on the road side slope in Kagawa pref.. The altitude is about 200m, the direction of the slope surface is S34°W and the average gradient is 34°. On 16-18, March and 17-18, June 1997, the experimental soil was picked at three different points, first at a ridge area of the mountain, second at a middle area and third at a dale area of the same mountain and packed them in the jute sandbags. After two years the examination area is covered with many plants. The plants density are 4.4-13.1 stems/sqm and 15-26 spaces are confirmed in the one separated area. The predominant plants in this area are Mallotus japonicus, Rhus javanica, Araria elata and other pioneer plants. In the area of ridge soil packing sandbags, a lot of Miscanthus sinensis spring up and hang over the other plants. The well covered areas by these plants are protected from soil erosion. The relation between the erosion ratio(%):(y) and the sum up plants coverage ratio(%):(x) is calculated and the regression equation is y = -0.11x + 33.3 (r=-0.521^*).

Function of 'Ecological Tree Planting' Site in Artificial Islands on the Fifteenth Year After Planting as Habitats of Insects, with Special Reference to Stand Structure Utilized by a Cicada Species, Cryptotympana facialis(PAPERS OF THE 18th SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH MEETING)

To cralify the formation of the structure of forest stands created by 'ecological tree planting' techniqe in artificial islands and its potential for habitats of insects, the conditions of the stands and the insect fauna were investigated in an artificial island (on the fifteenth year after planting) and neighboring areas at Gobo city. In the island, the numbers of species and individuals of ground beetles such as silphid and carabid beetles were few, however, a large number of cicadas, particularly Cryptotympana facialis, were inhabiting in the island. The adult cicadas abounded in the stands showing well developed vegetation layers, and the upper layer were mainly composed of Machilus thunbergu and Elaecocarpus sylvestris. But most of the cicadas seemed to oviposit and/or moult into adults in the stands without such upper layer. In general, stands composed of Quercus phillyraeoides and Rhaphiolepis indica were utilized as oviposition and/or emergence place.

The impacts of the long-distance transportation of plant materials for the revegetation on local populations of insects.

These days, plant materials for the revegetation have been transported over the long distance in Japan. Because the plant materials have been carried with large quantities of soil and other plants, they must have been accompanied by many living things, including a wide range of insects. In this paper, we demonstrated that the evidence of the genetic divergence among five local populations of the small insect, Thrips nigropilosus, living on the one of the plant materials for the revegetation, Artemisia princeps; critical daylengths at 18°C for induction of the reproductive diapause and the brachypterous form in females of four populations, Wakkanai, Abashiri, Kyoto and Nagasaki populations, were between 11hrs and 14hrs and different from each other, whereas Naha population dose not show critical daylengths between 8hrs and 15hrs. Inter-population crosses between the local populations probably disturbe their genetic constructions. This possibly results in a decrease in the number of individuals in the population, because the diapause and the wing form are life history traits directly affecting the reproductive success. Thus, the transportation of the plant materials may disturbe genetic construction of local populations of living things. A general rule for the use of plant materials for the revegetation should be proposed.

Effect of the chilled treatment on the flowering of Phlox subulata L.

Phlox subulata L. were grown in two cold conditions ; at 5℃ and outdoor, for 0,20,40 and 60 days from Dec. 4. Then the plants were transferred to two growth chambers under 20 hrs photoperiod ; at 25℃ constant, and day/night temperature at 25/18℃ (Experiment 1). In the summer, the other plants were grown in two cold conditions ; at 10℃ and 15℃, for 5,10,15,25 and 40 days from July 25. Then the plants were carried to outdoor (Experiment 2). Many inflorescences were formed in the chilled treatments of Experiment 1,however only a few inflorescence was formed in the not chilled treatments of Experiment 1,and in the all treatments of Experiment 2. These results indicated that P.subulata required cold stimulation to form inflorescences only in the winter. So P.subulata is the faculative chilling required plant. The shoot lengths were shorter as the chilled periods were longer. There were negative relationships between lengths of shoots and numbers of inflorescenses (P≦0.05). The relationships seem to be one of the correlative inhibition phenomenon.

緑化樹木の生物季節に関する研究

数種の緑化樹木を対象に,その季節変化である生物季節現象を年間を通じて比較し,それらの花芽形成と開花に係る温度,日長特性について解明した.さらに,研究対象とした成長型の異なる緑化樹木のいずれもが,葉芽と花芽の発育は相互抑制の関係にあることを解明すると同時に,葉芽の発育の抑制が花芽の発育を促進することを明らかにした.また,開花の温度・日長特性は天然分布を変化させてきたことを指摘し,地球温暖化が生物季節現象と緑化木の植栽可能域に影響することに論及した.

トータルエコシステム技術者の必要性

公園緑地や森林の生態環境を復元し維持するためには,生態学に対する深い造詣と土木工学的な知識並びに技術を有するトータルエコシステム技術者の活躍が不可欠であると解説した.さらに,草地や森林の公益的機能と役割について整理,解説し,食物連鎖を基本とする生態系の保護,保全,修復の違いを明確に区分した.その上で,近年の日本の公園,緑地,草地,森林を整備する上で,生態環境の保全と修復が極めて重要であることを指摘した.

樹木の芽の休眠現象について,生理生態学的な視点から解説,整理し,休眠現象に関するこれまでの諸学説にみられた矛盾点を指摘,訂正した.さらに,温度,日長条件とのバランスによって影響を受ける芽の休眠現象と成長との関連性についても整理した.また,休眠現象に関わる用語の不統一性と意味的に不適合な用語,とりわけ邦語の使用によって,休眠現象に係るメカニズムに対する理解が妨げられていることを指摘し,適切な用語に統一することを提案した.
