“An Educational Software for Novices in Basic Pencil Drawing”

A picture is one of important research subjects in order to make our life spiritually rich. Most studies on pictures, however, only propose some substitute functions of actual drawing or painting materials. There is no system that evaluates pictures drawn by users and gives advice about them. We propose an educational software for beginners in basic pencil drawing. Our system receives a subject (motif) data set and an image of a user's sketch and returns advice to the user. The processing is composed of the four functions: feature extraction of motifs, feature extraction of sketches, error identification, and generation and presentation of advice. We developed and experimented a prototype system limited to treat a basic motif and some principal advice. 現在,心を豊かにすることに関する研究がさまざまな分野で行われている.その対象の1 つとして絵画がある.絵画に関する研究は数多く行われているが,実際の画材の代替機能に関するものが主流であり,描かれた絵画を評価し,描き方を指導するシステムは存在しない.そこで,絵画の基本であるデッサンに対象をしぼり,初心者が画用紙に鉛筆で描くデッサンの学習支援システムを提案する.提案システムは,デッサン画像とモチーフ情報とを入力とし,評価およびアドバイスをユーザへ返すものである.その処理は,デッサンの特徴抽出,モチーフの特徴抽出,デッサンの誤りの同定,アドバイスの生成と提示の4 つの機能で行われる.モチーフを皿とジョッキに限定し,構図や形状に関する主要なアドバイス11 項目の処理を行うプロトタイプシステムを作成して試用実験を行い,提案システムの有効性を確認した.

We developed a remote telescope system. Students can observe celestial bodies witb live pictare with the remote telescope system tbrougb Internet. If they use it from opposite side of the earth, they can see the live picture of celestial bodies in the day time by time difference. We also developed virtual planetarium, virtual telescope, and moon interface. By using them, novice students can use the system more easily with scientific interest. Moreover we also developed a management system for multi-user mode. We evaluated the systems.

Since special knowledge and technical skill are necesssry for sketch teacher, the numher of sketch teachers is not enough, and the opportunity of sketch learning is few. However, a computer system that teaches the method of drawing the sketch does not exist. Therefore we started a project which constructs such a computer system. We developed a remote meteorological observation system and interactive data publishing system on the web. Meteorological sensors collect data and send it to the DBMS. When students retrieve past data on the web, the data are brought with XML. Therefore the data can be transformed by XSLT with XSL style format in accordance with students' demand. The system has flexible GUI by using XML. Also the system can generate some pairs of problem and answer automatically to learn meteorology. This system will contribute to science education.

When we do aerial photography and an environmental research, a remote control helicopter (R/C helicopter) is excellent tool in the next point. For example, the cost of aerial photography and an environmental research work by R/C helicopter are low, also R/C helicopter pilot reservation fee are low price, and free from aviation law in Japan. But, R/C helicopter maneuvering and aerial photographing skills are necessary, and these are difficult to learn. Additionally, if the visibility of R/C helicopter is getting bad when it goes far away, operation is getting difficult. These problems are caused by the badness of autonomous stability on R/C helicopter system. In this study, we propose a new angle detection sensor for 3 axial rotations which is based on the development of the easy and safe steering system for the operation person.

In a pencil drawing class, a teacher explains often the differences between a drawing and a motif by many ways
even so, it is difficult for most learners to understand the existence of errors in his/her drawing. When a learner watches the 3D model of his/her drawing from appropriate viewpoints, he/she is immediately aware of the errors. This paper describes the technique of error visualization from a learner's erroneous drawing. We developed a drawing advice system that consists of a 3D model converter from a 2D image and an evaluation function to estimate the effect of the 3D model. We designed a geometrical formula that expresses the relation between the geometrical feature and the error expression in the teacher's advice.

Hue algorithm for plant healthiness monitoring using multispectral infrared camera system

Environment preservations of the forest become world-widely close-up. The remote sensing technologies by satellite have been used for observation of the forest. However, the observation system on the ground is also needed because the remote sensing by satellite is seriously hindered by atmospheric phenomena and detailed data are necessary for precise analysis of the state of forest. Therefore we developed a multispectral infrared camera system for plant healthiness monitoring. The infrared camera system has five infrared bandpass filters. A hue is defined from the five infrared images. We performed several experiments to confirm that the hue changes according as the plant healthiness decline. In this paper, we propose a plant healthiness evaluation method by detecting hue changes with time. Experimental results of observation of hue changes of a plant through a day using the multispectral infrared camera system are shown. The results show that hue in healthiness parts of plants are more stable than in weak pans when the circumambient conditions such as the sunshine condition are changed.
